“She’s right.” Xael strode forward. “She has just as much at stake in this as you do, Fin. So stop being a schmuck.”

Fin was growing colder. “Aschmuckwho wants to keep the woman I love alive.”

“Give her a little damn credit. It’s not the damn 1960s.” She reached under her black leather jacket and drew out a gleaming silver handgun, grabbed the grip, and handed it to me. “She knows how to shoot a damn gun.”

I clenched tight around it. Sig Sauer. The feel was nice, smaller…perfect actually. “I do, thank you, Xael.”

Since the island, I’d spent time at an indoor gun range. I wasn’t about to put my life in someone else's hands ever again, nor was I ready to trust someone else to protect Fin, not even Lazarus.

He’d help him, sure…

But would he die to protect him?The answer was simple: no.

“I’m coming,” I said, sliding the gun into the waistband of my jeans. “Whether you want me to or not. So either you accept that and put me to work, or we stand here and argue. Choice is yours.”

He looked at me like I was a stranger, then strode closer, wrapped his arm around my waist, and yanked me close. “Fuck, you’re gorgeous when you’re determined.”

But he pulled the gun from around my back instantly, then turned it in his grasp, checking the safety and then reached around, sliding it back into place as he stared into my eyes. The primal glare couldn’t be more erotic.

Excitement tore through me like a charge. If we didn’t have a damn war to go to, or a cabin full of our friends, we’d fuck…in a damn instant.

“So I take it that’s a yes?” Xael muttered slowly. “Or should we all give you a two a minute?”

“That’s a yes.” Fin stepped back, never once looking away. “Mateo.”

“I’ll make the call,” the Commander answered.

“Then let’s do this.” Lazarus bent low, kissing Kat. “Kitten.”

We were leaving in a blur of the booming of my heart.

“Stay safe,” Xael called out as I followed Fin out of the cabin.

My mind was racing when I climbed into the backseat of the four-wheel drive. Fin heaved the bag of weapons, placing it between the front seats within easy reach. He started the engine, headlights lighting the way when Laz strode out, then climbed into the passenger’s seat and closed the door.

We were rolling before I knew. Laz reached across and hit the stereo, letting the music fill the cabin. Fin tilted the rearview mirror, and our gaze collided in the reflection. He was scared. Hell, I was scared. But there was no way I was letting him do this without me.

I settled back, leaving silence to fill the void as we made our way along the dirt track, leaving the cabin behind. Headlights splashed along the asphalt when we climbed back onto the road.

“We go in hard,” Laz murmured, eyeing the bag of guns.

I knew what‘going in hard’meant. It meant if it moved, we killed it.

They weren’t playing. But could Fin do that when it came to his father?

God, I hoped so.

The thought of that consumed me as we headed to get our damn life back.

“Do we know if they accessed the hard drive? Are there a safety triggers set in place when it’s accessed?” I asked, my mind instantly trying to find hope in this madness. “Surely there would be…I mean, there’dhave to be.”

“Even if there was,” Laz muttered in front of me, “There’s no one to send the trigger to.”

He was right. I knew he was right.

The asshole from the island was dead.

Even if he sent the footage across the servers and off grid, there was no one who knew what kind of security mechanisms were in place. I mean, Smutter might not have had time to break the code yet…he might not’ve seen what there was to see.
