But if he had…

If he saw the footage of Fin. If he saw it, then he’d know. The memory slammed into me. In an instant, that howling wind of the cyclone, the gunfire when those mercenaries attacked. Gunfire cracked in my head, the sound a little dull now as I sat here in the backseat of the four-wheel drive, but it was there. The…crack…crack…crack…filled me, white flashes filled my mind.

And bathed in the light, I saw it. Fin standing behind Max when he knelt on the ground, pointing a gun to the back of his head.

Bang!

I flinched. Fin caught the movement in the reflection and looked my way. But he said nothing, almost like he knew what consumed me…almost like it was the same memory that consumed him as well.

“Anna, stay with me,” I murmured, catching the tiny flicker of a light from the darkness at my right.

I pulled up hard. The headlights were already dead, leaving me to drive by moonlight alone. I reached up, flicking off the interior lights before anyone opened the door and climbed out. She climbed out, closing the door with barely a sound. I didn’t want her here. Not at Smutter’s house or anywhere near this goddamn war.

But I had to trust her.

Trust she was strong.

Trust that she was lethal.

She reached behind her back and pulled out the gun Xael gave her as I reached into the bag and pulled out two filled clips and handed them to her.

The whites of her eyes were neon in the dark. Wide. Panicked. Her breaths were loud in my ears. I turned my head at the movement. Black on black shifted without making a sound. Any other time I would’ve been panicked, swinging my gun up at the movement. But I knew who it was.

I glanced up as Edon came closer, glancing at Anna without making a sound.

Still, I saw annoyance flash in his eyes.

This wasn’t because she was female…wasn’t because she wasn’t strong…it was because she was a liability…to me.

“You ready for this?” he asked.

“As ready as I’ll ever be.” I winced, as ready as you could be, knowing you were about to kill your own father.

Lazarus rounded the car, tucking his phone back into his pocket. A pang tore across my chest. No doubt the Rossi Prince said his goodbyes…

I glanced at the hitman…the one they called the Albanian. He was ruthless, cold…and Mateo’s younger brother. One I was damn grateful for.

“I’ll go ahead.” Edon took a step away. “Watch your damn backs.”

He left us behind, melting into the night like he was part of it. I looked at Lazarus, who had a gun in his hand like he’d been born with it and a set of bolt cutters in the other. He gave a nod, leaving me to look to Anna. She looked scared, so fucking scared.

Still, she gripped her gun and murmured, “Let’s get this done.”

My heart swelled. I’d never seen her so damn beautiful before.

I gripped my Sig in one hand and the bag of guns with the other, then turned toward the compound and the house that sat toward the back. Steel shone from Lazarus’ hand as he strode forward.

We moved fast, watching the compound for guards and monitors. Lazarus rushed forward, bent low. Theclip…clip…clip…barely reaching my ears before he yanked the fence up and waited. I glanced at Anna, but she was already rushing forward and hitting the ground, scurrying through and was out the other side.

She rushed forward, racing toward the corner of the steel building in front of us. My pulse raced with the movement, triggered by the sight of her disappearing from view. Lazarus was next, racing ahead. I ducked, scraping the snapped edges of the steel links along my back.

Pain slashed, making me bite down on a snarl and shove through. Then I was running, tearing across the dark, a little louder than I wanted. But fuck me, I couldn’t see her.

Then I caught sight of her, dressed in dark blue, her pale skin reflecting the moonlight. The plan was simple: get in. Find Smutter and the hard drive, get the information we came for, then kill him and get out.
