Boom!

The shot tore through the room, slamming into my attacker, driving him backward, until he fell. I didn’t have time to care about the blood that bloomed in the center of his chest. Instead, I drove myself forward, my pulse racing as I slammed into Fin’s side.

His arms wrapped around me, pulling me against his side.

“You okay?” He searched my eyes, his gun never once wavering from his father as he found my busted lips. “Did he do that to you?”

I didn’t answer. I didn’t need to. He swiveled his gun toward the bleeding mercenary and unleashed another shot. This time in the center of his forehead, making him slump against the floor.

Dominic Salvatore stood toward the end of the study. Three men were at his side, and Arnold Stutter was behind the desk, his hands raised in the air as Lazarus and Finley moved deeper into the room.

I glanced at Fin who just stepped forward, his gun moving from Stutter to his father.

“Finley,” Dominic murmured, never once flinching as we entered the room, even with the guns trained on him.

“Get away from the keyboard.” Fin jerked his gun, urging Smutter away.

My pulse was racing. Still, I forced myself forward, drawn by panic and that need to know. I rounded the other side of the desk, out of the firing line. Smutter lifted his gaze, and that cold, savage stare found me.

I stared at the screen, finding the prompt screen open and the rows and rows of commands, withincorrect command…incorrect command, triggered over and over again.

He didn’t get in…

He didn’t get in.

I looked to Fin who was waiting for me and shook my head.

That panicked glint turned stony as Dominic murmured, “I was wondering how long it’d take for you to get here. Wondering who you had in your corner, too.” He glanced to Lazarus, then to me, before his gaze moved to the doorway.

From the corner of my eye, Edon stepped inside, dressed in black, a sniper’s rifle in his hand. “I see you have quite the arsenal.”

I knelt over the keyboard, glancing at the file still locked, and then the list of commands and IP addresses on the screen, until I stopped. One of the IP addresses looked familiar.Too familiar.

I moved forward, backtracking his commands.

“What the fuck are you doing?” Smutter snapped, watching me as I narrowed in on that address, and instead of trying to hack my way into the file for the hard drive, I focused on that.

I tracked the details, pulling the address apart, using the skills I’d honed to track the address through different servers and locations until I came up with only one…

I lifted my gaze…my heart stuttering as I turned.

“You?” I whispered to Finley’s dad. “You were the one who put the drive up?”

Those careful eyes glinted.

“What are you talking about?” Smutter growled. “I’m just about to crack it. Just about to expose the fucking truth…that you killed my brother.”

BOOM!

Smutter jerked in the chair, then fell silent, a thick bead of blood slipping from the bullet wound in his head. I flinched with the sound and looked to Finley whose gun was still trained on the spot where he stood.

“You had the drive.” He turned back to his father and took aim. “You played us.”

“Not played…tested.”

My mind was racing, unable to keep up as I straightened.

“It was always going to come to this. You needed a trigger, or you’d never see yourself as worthy of the seat. Don’t you see?”
