I tried to shake off the fantasy of Finley’s hands around my neck and punched in my password, finding a message from dad.

Dad: Everything okay?

I swallowed hard and tried to breathe. My fingers moved on the keypad.Got here fine, the place is stunning.

Dad: Didn’t answer my question, Button.

The gruff voice at the front of the class echoed in stereo as I gave a slow exhale and typed.I’m trying, Dad.

I waited, and waited, shifting my gaze to the front of the class before the tinyding.

Dad: I’m proud of you, Button. But I’m close if you need me.

A surge of adrenaline coursed through me with the message as the lecturer talked of arches, loops, and whirls. I swiped and typed. Are you safe, Dad?

We were safe because no one really knew him. To expose himself like that wasn’t him…maybe not the data analyst, but it was the dad.

A message popped up.

Dad: Always.

“There’s a party tonight,” Kat murmured, leaning close. “And we’re going.”

I jerked my gaze to hers with a slow shake of my head. “I don’t do—“

“You dohere,”she commanded.“Teeth, remember?”

Teeth, right.

I’m close if you need me…

Dad’s message lingered as I tried to concentrate. But a murmur swept through the other side of the theatre as the lecturer spoke about gunshot residue like we were just a regular class. But we weren’t…and we sure as hell weren’t a class of would-be cops.

The gray-haired investigator paced behind the podium. “That’s why gloves and coveralls are important.”

“No blowback on this suit, it cost too damn much,” some asshole muttered.

I winced as Kat rolled her eyes. “Showoff.”

Before long, the instructor said, “Right, I think that’s enough for the day. Bruno, Hunter, and Mr. Black. Can I see you guys down in front for a minute? I have a little something extra I think you might be interested in.”

Really? Just like the class before. I frowned and glanced toward the movement.

“Anna…class is already over.”

I jerked my gaze up. I was the only one still sitting. I shoved to my feet, finding the three guys slowly making their way to the front. Kat followed my focus. “What is it?”

“That’s the exact same thing that happened in the class before.”

“What?” she asked with a smirk, swinging her gaze back to me with a shrug. “Probably happens in every class.”

“Kat, will I see you tonight?” the six-foot guy from before asked hopefully.

“Jake, you’re a nice guy,” she said sweetly. “But you’re just not my type, sorry.”

“Not your type?” he muttered, and scowled.

The guy was Adonis in the flesh, muscled, tall…andobviouslyinto her. But right now, all she cared about was me. I don’t know which of us was more pathetic.
