But the diversion was all I'd needed. I jerked my gaze to the side, finding my one hope of salvation…the stairwell door. I pushed away from the wall, took a couple of steps on trembling legs, and ran.

The bright hallway was a blur. I reached out, clawed the handle, and yanked. Dimness swallowed me the moment I stepped onto the landing, and the cold, fetid scent of concrete hit me like a blow.

“Anna!”Finley’s roar was cut off by theboomof the door slamming behind me.

Then I was running, stumbling down flight after flight, with only the faint glow of the exit lights to guide my way.

Tears blurred my sight, sliding down my cheeks. Anger followed, making me jerk my hand up and slap the tears away as they slid down. I ran and kept on running, lunging down stair after stair until my ankles screamed with the pain of the impact.

“Anna, STOP!” Finley’s voice kept coming and coming and coming.

“Stay the fuck away from me, Finley!” I screamed, the words resounding in the stairwell.

Green lights beckoned, making me stumble, and I shoved through a door. I blinked into the glare. The steady thump of music sounded high above me. My harsh breaths were frantic. I scanned the empty hallway and stumbled toward the elevator.

Hard grunts sounded from an open door. “Spread your legs, baby,” a guy urged from inside a room. “Show me that perfect pussy.”

My hand fluttered to my neck and the fingers grazed my flesh as I turned, frantically stabbing the button for the elevator. Jesus fucking Christ. This was not what I'd thought this place was going to be.

A woman’s moan followed, carnal, almost bestial as the elevator shuddered and the doors opened wide. I yanked at the neckline of my dress and stumbled inside, punching the button for the door to close. I had to get out of there, away from Finley and this place.

No air…no air.

I couldn’t breathe.

Couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

Tears still slid down my cheeks as I squeezed my eyes shut, and the doors closed.

Just a goddamn virgin.

Humiliation burned my cheeks

Thunderous steps echoed from the hallway as the elevator sank. Cold night air drifted to me when it came to a stop and the doors opened. I opened my eyes and shoved forward, making for the glass doors.

My phone was in my hand before I knew it. My trembling fingers swiped, punching in the secure code to access my messages as I ran without thinking. I just wanted to get out of there as fast as I could.

“Anna,” Dad’s voice was filled with concern. “What’s wrong?”

“I want out of here,” I cried. “Dad, please.”

The sound of bedsheets rustled. “What happened?”

My tears were warm against my cool cheeks. How the hell could I tell him? Tell him I was a failure…tell him I felt too fucking much here. “I’m sorry.” I swallowed hard and swiped my tears again. “I can’t find the cont—” I froze, the word still on my lips. “Dad, I—“

“Did…did anyone hurt you?”

I own you, Anna. The words mingled with the feel of his lips on mine. My pulse thundered and heat bloomed. “No.”

“Hold tight, sweetheart.” The hiss of his zipper sounded, the slur of sleep forgotten in his tone. “I’m on my way.”

I pushed on and kept walking, feeling like a goddamn failure. Dad was coming, and Finley Salvatore would have his way—me as far away from this place as possible.

I fucking own you, Anna.

Finley’s words filled my head.

I kept on walking, still swiping tears from my cheeks, wishing they'd dry up. “Fuck you.”
