Xael rubbed Kat’s bare leg, running her hand along her shin toward her knee. My breath deepened with the possessive touch, my gaze riveted as she grasped Kat's knee and pushed her skirt higher. “The crap they’re spewing in the class, like some of us don’t know the real story of what happened.”

Kat pushed upright, dislodging Xael’s hand. “Wait a minute. I don’t know the real story.”

“Then you’re in for a doozy,” Evan muttered, grabbing the glass of what looked like Scotch beside her. “We were just discussing this, were we not?”

“That and everything else about the damn seats.” Xael shook her head and then glanced my way.

But we were captivated, watching Xael as she just smiled, drained her champagne and sighed.

“Thisis the one not even the Commissionwill tell you,” Xael started, and held out her hand to Evan.

With a sigh and a few choice words, the blonde handed over her glass.

Xael drained the glass and handed it back. “So, originally there were six families, right?”

Six?

“You mean five,” Kat muttered. “I know that much.”

“No,” Xael smirked. “There weresix. Six families that controlled everything up and down the east and west coasts. Six families that fucking hated each other, but they hated another family even more. A family who was bigger, stronger, and more fucking ruthless. A family whose name isneveruttered, not in any kind of conversation. The story is, they disappeared…like every fucking son, every goddamn daughter, and every man who’d ever worked for them.Poof!Just like that. Youthinkthe goddamn Commission was built to stop the pissing matches over who controls what. But, no. It was a blood pact, pure and simple. A fucking blood pact they hate. Why else do you think there’s so much bad fucking blood between them? That’s what the goddamn code is built on. Not loyalty…fucking mistrust.”

“Jesus Christ,” Kat muttered, her eyes wide.

“How do you know all that?” I asked.

“I’m a goddamn Davies, that’s how.”

A Davies…one of the so-called Families.

“You know who was the founding member, right? The one family with more to lose than any of them?”

Cold plunged deep inside me. I didn’t want to hear it…didn’t want to know.

Because deep down, I’d always known there was something very wrong with them.

Still, Xael smiled and plunged that unseen blade home. “The fucking Salvatores.”

Finley

She went into that damn building and she didn’t come out…not for fucking hours. Twenty goddamn messages from Max and a deliberately missed call from my father later and still, I couldn’t take my eyes off the place.

I waited for her.

Sweating like a bastard. The muscles clenched at the back of my neck.

What the fuck was going on up there?

I knew who stayed in that apartment, and knew well enough to stay the hell away. From the both of them. Evan Valachi and Xael Davies were two women I hadnointention of tangling with. Not only were they goddamn Commission daughters, they weren’t my type.

Self-opinionated, loud, and fucking reckless. Man-eaters, the both of them. It made sense someone like Kat VanHalen was friends with them, but I didn’t like Anna there. Not with their damn questions…not with anything.

But finally, the front doors opened and they walked out, all four of them, laughing and smiling. Best fucking friends now. That goddamn twitch came at the corner of my eye, jerking and dancing, making me lick my lips and clench my teeth.

I hung back, watching Xael and Evan break off with a wave and a bark of laughter. I lowered my head, stepped around the thick foliage of the ferns, and followed with my damn heart booming in my chest. A second later Anna glanced over her shoulder, scanned the grounds, and stepped off the path, heading for Building Two, and left Kat behind.

I lifted my phone and pulled up her class schedule.Weapons class 301: Introduction to Unarmed Combat for Beginners.
