Theclickof the lock sounded before his careful words. “Second time, Finley. This is the second time with her. You’re unraveling.”

“Unraveling?” I growled and turned, finding him leaning against the closed door, his hands behind him.

“Yes,” that stony stare was all for me this time. “Unraveling.”

I'd watched the bastard order a hit just last night. There was blood on his hands, blood all over his fucking touch, and yetIwas the one unraveling? He turned his head toward the door. “Why her?”

“Stay the fuck out of my family business, Mateo,” I warned.

“Family business, huh?” he repeated. “Looked awfully personal to me. You sure you’re not clouded?”

I took a step closer and clenched my fist. “No, I’m not fuckingclouded.”

The nod was careful as he turned that steely gaze to mine. “I’m glad to hear it. I wouldn’t want anything to get back to your father.”

I bared my teeth. “Who the fuck do you think sent me?”

Anna

Don’t run…don’t run…don’t…run.

My fingers shook as I grabbed my phone. The hallways blurred. All I could feel was his body and hear the pain in his words.Fuck me, Anna, I want you back.My steps stuttered. The corner up ahead was my salvation.

Those words plunged right through me and spilled through my mind.

He wanted me back….

But I knew the truth now.

A truth that had rocked my world.

You know who was the founding member, right? The one family with more to lose than any of them?

It all made sense now. All the terror in my dad’s voice, the desperation to get me here, far away from Dominic Salvatore…

With Xael’s words ringing in my ears, I ran, my head down, swiping my thumb across the screen and punching in the code to unlock the phone as I rounded the corner and slammed into a wall.

“Fuck!”The roar was brutal.

My phone went flying and I hit the wall again, bouncing before rough hands grabbed me.

Papers scattered as a savage gaze burned right through me. “What the fuck were you running from, a goddamn bear?”

I couldn’t speak, couldn’t think. My throat thickened, my breaths too shallow as I knelt and began to gather the fallen papers from the floor. “No…I’m s-sorry…I…”

He knelt, too, his big hands grabbing two of his books before he stilled. “Miss Eden?”

I jerked my gaze to his. He knew my name…heknew my name.

I tried to force my mind to work, tried to push back the panic, tried to scan my memory. “Do I know you?”

“Fifty First Dates, is it?” The lecturer gave a wink. “Yesterday you wanted extra tutoring and today I’m barely remembered. What a lasting impression.”

Former FBI guy.The realization hit me. “Psychology.”

The smile was fast. “Glad you finally remember.” A nod toward my head. “And there’s no concussion.”
