Anna: Because I want you safe.

“You want me safe? You want me fucking safe?” It was the alcohol talking, and it almost smothered her message.

Finley: And if I said no, what then, Anna?

Anna: Then I’d say lock your doors, grab a gun, and don’t sleep tonight.

Finley: Careful there. You almost sound like you care.

I waited.

Waited.

The smirk on my lips trembled.

Fear punched through.

Anna: I do care, Finley.

The words hit me harder than the Macallan ever could. Still, I drank, my thumbs flying across the screen.

Finley: We found him, did they tell you that?

Nothing. There was nothing for so long, I thought it was done, that whatever we had wasdone.Gone and buried, snuffed out before it ever began.

Until the phone rang.

I stared at the screen as it sounded with a different tone. I punched off the video and answered the call. “What do you want, Anna?”

“Talk to me,” she murmured quietly into the phone.

I closed my eyes at the sound of her voice. Pain quaked through me, making my voice husky. “I can’t do this.”

The sound of sheets rustling came through the phone as she moved.

I opened my eyes in an instant, my senses firing, my breath growing harsh. “Where are you?”

I winced at the tone. Still, she answered. “I’m in my apartment. Turn your video on.”

“Alone?” I scowled, fear driving ice through my veins.

“Yes, alone, Finley. Don’t worry, Kat’s not here, no one can hear us.”

She’s alone, all alone…the image of Baldeon punched to the surface of my mind. “You think I give a shit about that? What do you mean, Kat’s not there?”

Fear bled into her tone. The sheets whispered again. “She’s at Damon’s.”

“And she left you there on your own?” I forced the words through clenched teeth. I was already moving, shoving up from the bed, that savage part of me burning with need. “Stay right where you are. I’m on my way.”

“No. Finley, stop,” she commanded, stopping me cold before her voice softened. “There’re two guards downstairs. I’m perfectly safe here.”

But that was a lie.

I knew it.

And so did she.

“Safe, huh?” I licked my lips as a hurricane moved through my chest. Safe…how could she be safewhen she wasn’t with me?
