“Bullshit” I denied.

But she wasn’t done. “Like totally take a fucking bullet for you,” she continued.

That time I couldn’t meet her gaze.

Instead, I drank my chocolate, letting the conversation grow just as cold.

“I might not be the best person to talk to about the kind of things you’re feeling here, but I’m a good listener,” she said finally, then slowly rose and, with a wave of her hand, she offered, “My door is always open.”

She drained the rest of her cup, rinsed it, and placed it in the dishwasher.

“That’s because you have no door,” I answered, and followed her.

“True,” she admitted with a shrug, and stifled a yawn. “But the offer's there anyway.”

“You sound tired,” I said as I rinsed my own cup and placed it away.

She just turned and gave me a slow smile. “I should be.”

“I don’t want to know,” I cried, lifting my hand.

“I just need a nap. Wake me in an hour if I'm not up, ‘kay, and we’ll do something fun.”

“Sure,” I answered, but even as I said the word, I knew it was a lie.

Instead, I just watched her walk into her room and flop onto her bed, and within minutes, her deep, even breaths bordered on snores. I went into my bedroom, grabbed my phone, and sat on the bed, flicking open my messages.

But it wasn’t the map I pulled up and stared at. It was Finley’s messages, the last ones we'd exchanged…and the ones I’d saved in a private folder on my phone before our lives had gone to hell.

Fin:You know, you’re pretty cute for a geek.

Who are you calling a geek, thug?

Fin: thug, huh? I guess I am, aren’t I?

Meh, as much as I’m a geek.

Fin: Night, Anna. See you next week.

Night, Fin.

Fin:You didn’t come with your father tonight, what gives?

Why? Didn’t think you’d notice my absence.

Fin: Looks like you were wrong. The numbers look shoddy. I think your dad is getting old.

You weren’t even at the meeting, were you?

Fin: Busted. Maybe next time we’ll see each other?

Fin: Are you asleep?

Fin: Anna…I need you…

I staredat that last message Finley had sent me. The last one before my father had told me what Dominic Salvatore was planning. The last one before my father made plans to get us away from whatever war was brewing for the Salvatores.

You’re into him and he’s totally into you, like head over heels into you…like totally take a fucking bullet for you.
