I flinched at the desolation in his voice. Black moved on black, drawing my focus to the sofa. He sat, his arms splayed out on either side of him, until he pushed up and came toward me, his dark eyes shimmering with that same demented gaze.
“You.” I sucked in hard breaths.“What the fuckwasthat?”
There was no answer, just a chilling curl of his lips.
Fear punched through me.
I’d never been scared of him…until now.
“What was that?” he repeated…sounding too much like his father.“What. Was. That?”
He stopped in front of me, forcing me to lift my gaze to meet his.
“I think you have it all wrong. I think it should bemeaskingyouwhat the fuck was that? I mean, you’re the one lying, aren’t you?Where were you going, Anna?” He grabbed my arm and yanked me closer, his eyes blazing with rage.“And who the fuck were you going with?”
I yanked my arm from his hold and stepped around him. “Who said I was leaving with anyone?”
The low chuckle sent chills along my spine. “You take me for a goddamn fool?” He strode toward the sofa, bent, and held my backpack in the air. “Want to try again?”
I stared at the pack, then slowly turned, but I didn’t leave him at my back. That low voice in my head was a warning now.
“It wasn’t Kat…or yournewbest friends Evan or Xael. Were you planning on leaving with another man? Is that what this is…this goddamncharade?”He stalked closer and fear snaked down my spine. “Do you have a lover, Anna? Someone on the island…someone I know?”
I couldn’t speak.
That malice in him had taken hold.
I stepped backwards as he advanced.
“It all makes sense now.” A frightening bark of laughter ripped free. “All the running, all the fucking fighting. Is my little virgin no more? Did you finally give it up, Anna? Was I already too late?”
Through the dark windows, lightning speared across the sky.
“Have. You. Fucked. Another. Man?” he screamed at me.
I flinched at his roar.“No!”Desperation spilled free as I unleashed like the storm outside. “There’s only ever been you, you selfishbastard!I waited…I waited for you!”
He was uncaring…unkind.Striding forward, with a sudden movement he lifted me into the air. But my body took over this time, wrapping my legs around his waist. I was just as hungry, just as depraved, meeting his lips with mine, my fingers spearing through his hair before I fisted tight.
A low, animalistic moan tore from his chest and spilled into my mouth. I kissed him until my lips burned, swallowing that sound before I broke away and stared into his eyes. “There’s only ever been you, Finley, in my dreams, in my fantasies. I want you…more than I want to survive.”
He didn’t understand my words, not the real impact of them.
But I did.
I knew exactly what I’d just done.
I'd chosen Finley over my father.
Like the storm outside, electricity carved through my veins.
He strode forward, his hands tearing at my windbreaker before he threw me through the air. I hit his bed with athudand watched as he slowly advanced. “You want me? Tell me, Anna, say the goddamn words I need to hear.”
My body tensed as he came closer.
