“Something’s changed,” Kat called out as I stepped out of my panties and hit the faucets for the shower. “Are you pissed off with me or something?”

“No,” I answered, and washed my hair, then my body, carefully sliding my hand between my thighs. “Of course not.”

He came inside me.

The thought burned.

Shit.

It was lucky for me I’d only just finished my period. But that didn’t mean it couldn’t happen.Pregnant…with Finley’s baby. The thought made me freeze, my soapy hand resting across my belly. That would be the kind of war I wasn’t ready to handle. I dropped my head backwards and let the water run over my face.

Kat stepped onto the doorway as I wrapped a towel around my body. “So, what gives with the backpack?”

I winced, jerked my gaze to hers, and worked a comb through my wet hair. “Nothing, I went for a walk.”

“A walk, huh?” She mulled over the words. “The walk didn’t happen to end up in Finley Salvatore’s bed, did it?”

My face burned as I lifted my gaze to the mirror. The reaction was so fucking obvious.

“Iknew it!”Kat barked. “Holy shit, Anna.”

"It’s not a big deal, okay?” I protested, the burning spreading out from my neck.

But not making things a big deal wasn’t how Kat rolled. She rushed into the bathroom and yanked me against her in a hug. “No, of course not. Not a big deal at all, except that you punched your v-card.”

I lowered my head, taking comfort in her hold.

It wasn’t a big deal at all…except it was.

Kat pulled back to stare into my eyes, concern darkening hers. “Itwasconsensual, right?”

I flinched. “Yes…of course.”

“Good,” relief flooded her words on a slow exhale before she cocked her head to the side. “So, was it good?”

My face burned even hotter.

She just threw her head back and laughed. “I’m takingthatas a yes.”

I just tried to focus on my hair as she turned and walked from the bathroom, still laughing. “I guess that means stayovers and all the soppy shit that comes with infatuation?”

That burning on my face grew cold.Just let me go, Finley. My own words surfaced with a shudder.

Cozy and soppy? No, I had a feeling that wasn’t how this was going to be. “Don’t count on it.”

“Oh, one and done, huh?” Kat called from the bedroom, striding into my closet. “I get that. They’re like a drug. Do it once, get it all out of your system, then a hit of Narcan. You don’t want to become addicted, especially to someone like Finley Salvatore. I heard his father is a real piece of fucking work.”

A real piece of work…

I stared at my reflection as fear bloomed deep inside. “Yeah,” I muttered. “You could say that.”

“Did you say something?”

I jerked, tearing my gaze away from the mirror, and strode from the bathroom. “No, and what’s all this?” My clothes were set out on the bed.

“You look like you need all the help you can get today and the islandsoisn’t the place for comfy sweats and t-shirts.”

My teal dress with spaghetti straps and my leather bomber jacket. Right. I glanced at the window and the brooding clouds that were starting to break up. “A dress, in this weather?”
