I wanted to be there with her, to take care of her like I should’ve done last night. I wanted to fucking hold her, to sleep beside her…and love her. That made my hand freeze, fingers fisted in my hair. No…God, no.That can’t happen, not with someone like her.

This was nothing more than an infatuation, right? Nothing more than a job. My father’s instructions had been clear.Haunt her fucking steps, make sure she and her father deliver my money…and don’t let her out of your goddamn sight.

And she wasn’t…even now.

I lowered my hand, catching the goddamn tremble as I rewound again, taking her past where she'd stumbled in, and kept going. The apartment was dark, the seconds the only thing moving as the time ran backwards. Then there was movement…from her bedroom.

“Shit.” I hit the button and ran it forward.

She headed out of her room…but it wasn’t to the elevator, it was somewhere deeper in the apartment. I leaned closer, intrigued. I ran it back, catching the movement once more. Her head was down, the backpack over her shoulder.Where the hell are you going?

She glanced toward Kat’s bedroom, then moved deeper into the apartment, disappearing into the gloom. I scanned the other cameras, pressing each button, but none captured her again. So I moved to the one outside her bedroom, and waited…and waited…and waited.

But she didn’t return. I rescanned the others, clicking on the camera outside the building and ran it again from the time she disappeared. It felt like a damn hour until finally she stepped into view from outside the building. My mind raced, working out how the hell she'd managed to get from the top floor of the goddamn building to the ground without killing her damn self. There was only one logical conclusion, she'd climbed.

“Jesus, Anna,” I muttered.

Goosebumps raced along my arms as she glanced toward the guard sitting in the foyer, then raced ahead, melting into the palms. I lost her as she ran, frantically switching from camera to camera, hoping like hell I caught sight of her.

But I didn’t…she was lost to the night.

I paused the replay and leaned back against the seat. She'd avoided the damn guard and I swore there was sadness in her eyes as she'd slipped from her room and glanced toward Kat’s. Whoever she was meeting with forced my little launderer to not only risk her damn life climbing down the outside of the building, but hurt her by making her leave her newfound friend behind.

I smothered the flare of annoyance at that.

I might not particularly like Kat VanHalen, but Anna did, and seeing her forced to hide and run from her pissed me the fuck off. I leaned forward as that seething knowledge burned, but before I switched off the camera feeds to her apartment, my hand stilled.

There was something she'd said to me the night I'd found Baldeon dead.

Something I hadn’t been able to shake.

You said something to me. You told me you…touched yourself when you thought of me. That’s what I want. It’s only fair, right? After you saw me when you took my phone.

Saw her when I took her phone.

When she'd said it, I was too caught up in the moment, but since then, the words had nagged at me. I leaned forward, switching to the night her father had come to take her away, and moved the timing forward.

I’d instructed Pavlov to switch her phone with the new one, right before he followed her father and lost him when he hit the mainland. “Saw you when I took your phone, huh?” I murmured, and slowed the camera, leaving it playing.

She was in bed, tossing and turning. The whites of her eyes flared bright in the night vision camera until she closed them. I leaned closer as her hand moved, caressing her breast before slipping under the sheets. “Jesus, Anna.”

I’d never wanted to invade her privacy so fucking bad and listen to her sweet little moans…

She shifted, worming that perfect body as her hand moved between her legs under the sheets. The control room office blurred into nothing as I watched her. She was the only one I wanted to see. Movement came from the corner of the screen. A towering dark shape headed for her room as Pavlov moved without a sound.

He was a former Navy SEAL. He was ruthless and dangerous. But most of all…he was loyal.

My pulse sped, my heart hammered, and even though I knew he was obeyingmyorders, my fists clenched as he slipped into her room and neared her bed. My eyes burned, unable to tear my gaze from the dark blur beside her bed.

She was oblivious, trapped by desire, left vulnerable by her own fucking heat.

The kind of heat that should be mine.

Pavlov didn’t just switch the goddamn phone and leave. No, the dark blur stood there beside her bed, motionless…mesmerized. My heart jerked asthe door to the control room office opened and the guard walked in.

“It’s all done, Mr. Salvatore.”

“Leave it and get out.” I forced the words through clenched teeth.
