“Oh, this should be good.” She finishes the last bite of the banana and leans toward me, eager for the dirty details.

“Don’t get too excited,” I tell her. “My overprotective idiot brother told him to check in on me.”

“Which I think you need to appreciate a little more. I wish I had somebody looking out for me the way he does for you.”

“Not the point at the moment,” I say with a frown.

“You’re right.” She waves her hand again. “Continue.”

I give her a rundown of the evening. How he showed up even when I thought there was no chance in hell since he hates karaoke. The way it was so easy talking with him even after all this time not seeing one another. Our terrible but somehow successful rendition of “I Got You Babe.” And finally, our almost kiss before he bailed and the fact that he hasn’t contacted me since.

“Wow,” Landry says, leaning back in her seat. “You’ve really been holding out on me.”

“You’ve been kind of busy.” I point to the paperwork in front of her.

She’s quiet for a moment before she finally asks, “So nothing has ever happened between you two before karaoke?”

“He may have been my first kiss,” I admit.

“May have?”

“He was.”

“Okay, this just got way more interesting.”

She listens as I tell her about that last summer before college.

“That’s so freaking cute I could smack you in the face with this pillow.”

I chuckle. “Please don’t.”

“What if you end up with him? What if you get married and have babies?”

“Whoa!” I hold up my hands to stop her. “He wouldn’t even kiss me when given the perfect opportunity. What makes you think we’d actually end up together?”

“A bookshelf filled with unattainable romance novels that still find a way to give me hope that I will find that perfect someone.”

“Oh, right.” I nod as a silence settles between us.

My phone begins to ring next to me, shattering the quiet. I look down and see Alec’s name appear on the screen. I don’t move. It’s like my whole body is immobile, and my spirit is hovering above me, yelling for me to pick up the damn phone.

“Don’t just sit there,” Landry says. “Answer it.”

I shake my head, unsure of what to say. He’s probably just calling to apologize, to pretend nothing happened, to make sure that I don’t tell my brother what almost happened between us.

“Oh my gosh,” Landry grumbles before grabbing the phone and pressing the button to answer the call.

“What did you do that for?” I hiss.

“Because you are too much of a wuss to do it yourself.” Then tosses me the phone with a wicked smile on her face. “Say hello.”

“Devrie? Are you there?” I hear Alec call out over the phone.

I give Landry my best withering look, but it doesn’t faze her. Little does she know there will be some payback in the future for her.

“Hello?”

“Hey,” Alec says, with a note of relief in his voice. “I wasn’t sure you were going to answer.”
