"You and I both know he can go ahead and try. Last time I checked, I was apparently hard to kill," I reasoned as I landed on the last step and nudged my head upward in greeting at the five suited guards waiting at the glass doors.

They all nodded in acknowledgment as the one standing in the middle opened the glass door for me.

"Thanks, boys. Have a good night."

"Good night, Miss De Luca."

The guards of my residence knew of my predicament, though they were a rare breed of gargoyle shifters from the holy lands of Notre Dame. You wouldn't expect a church to be playing around with forbidden magic, but that was a whole other section of madness I didn't bother stepping into.

At least these five guards, who were actually brothers, were able to get out of the crazy space of stained-glass windows and holy water and venture here. They’d accepted my father's condition of being the best guards and info suckers this city had to offer.

Who would have thought gargoyles would be amazing spies? I guess with their statue-like figures acting like pieces of artwork during the day, they could easily snatch whatever information they required without much hassle.

"You're home?"

"Almost," I replied. "Thought you knew that."

"Onyx is busy so I cut things short with my investigation plans."

"Let me guess," I offered. "He's masturbating somewhere after I denied him sex and left you to do the balancing act of business and making sure I'm alive, correct?"

"Sure," he replied. "He killed two people that tried to get into your locker room earlier, by the way."

"Oh did he?"

"You sound turned on."

"Your acknowledgment sounds weird as hell, but your observant nature is right on," I confessed. "C'mon. Don't you think it's damn right hot for a man to kill for you and not leave a single stain of blood for you to notice? So romantic."

"You're fucked up in the head."

"You knew that already," I reasoned. "Nothing has changed."

"Aside from your breasts getting bigger and your sanity getting a tad crazier," he commented.

"I love when you compliment me."

"Make sure you sleep early."

"Ya, ya," I replied. "Better warn the stalker that his time is up."

"Oh. Hold on to that thought," he replied, and then I heard a gunshot followed by a drawled out a groan.

I shook my head. "Let me guess. Papa Dearest was so mad that I got attacked by that foreign pack that he sent you to get rid of that useless stalker who couldn't even take one down?"

"Correct," he answered with a hint of amusement. "I told him he was useless, but he didn't believe me. Apparently having Russian spy on your resume makes you worthy of a trial."

"What a mistake." I sighed as I reached my private elevator and slipped the card out of my bra to press it against the keypad. "Guess you'll be out late."

"Nothing new."

The elevator doors opened, and I walked in and allowed the scanner to analyze my eye for the retina scan.

"I'm home so I'm hanging up."

"Ice that shoulder," he encouraged. "I don't want you complaining tomorrow. And no. I'm not giving you a massage."

"I wasn't going to ask you." I grinned at his comment.
