“Okay! Your turn.”

“My turn?” I wasn’t following what she wished for me to do.

“Draw a heart right here.” She pointed to the high bone of her cheek. “Make it pretty, Willow! I can’t fix it if you don’t.”

“O-Okay,” I whispered and slowly worked on drawing the heart that lightly sliced through her flesh.

When it was done, tiny blobs of blood formed in the lined work, but it didn’t bother Aura as the blade disappeared in my grasp in time for her to hold my hands once more.

"I call upon the fae gods and goddess. A request from your child who will one day rule.”She closed her eyes and took a deep breath—her exhale coming out nice and slow."Willow is very important to me. So important that losing her makes my heart hurt with sadness. She’s destined for lots of hardships, just like me, but together, we’re strong.”

She opened her eyes to meet mine.

“Together we’re invincible! A force that will make everyone quiver. That’s why they don’t want me to stay in this world. They don’t want us to fulfill our destiny, but no one will stop us from obtaining the truth. Only we have the power to end our paths!”

The mark began to burn lightly against my flesh, but it was a comforting sensation that filled me with a glimmer of hope.

"I’ll do anything to protect what’s destined for me. My throne, my kingdom, and my destiny with Willow. Our paths may be going in separate ways, but we’ll find each other one day. We won’t be puppets in this hidden scheme. We will rise into our roles, and when we meet again years from now, I’ll be remembered by my best friend who always acknowledged me from the shadows.”

“Aura? You’re leaving me?”

She gave me a sad look but shook her head as she squeezed my hands tightly.

"I’ve been chosen to go back home. I was supposed to go back long ago…but then I met you and well. It feels nice to be loved. To be acknowledged. To not be so…invisible. I’ll stay with you for your treatments! Like…a lucky charm! And well…then you’ll most likely forget about me for a bit.”

“Why?” I shook my head and scrunched my face. “Why do I have to forget about you? That’s not fair! You belong here, too! Why does it feel like…like…they’re replacing you…”

"That’s how it looks like, huh?” She nervously laughed but lifted my hands up and pressed her lips against them. “It’s hard to explain, Willow, but when your recovery is all over and you’re finally protected from this crazy world, you’ll finally know about everything. My new papa says things have to be as they are until we can gain immunity. I don’t really understand it, but once I rise to the throne, I’ll be able to do a lot more and can’t be controlled by the Coven. He’s doing this to protect me. To protect us. So that’s why you have to forget about me, but this mark will make sure you remember who I am. You just have to promise that you wish to remember me.”

“Of course, I want to remember you, Aura! You’re my best friend! I know not everyone can see you, but I can! I’ve been able to see you since I went into the lands of Faerie! You know I’d never abandon you.”

“I know.” She smiled and laughed quietly. “Though you’ll be a bit surprised when you see my true form. You can’t break up with me if you don’t like it.”

“Now you’re being dumb.” I huffed. “I accept you in any form, Aura! You accept me as a boy and a girl. I’ll accept every form of you!”

"I’m gonna miss you, Willow,” she earnestly whispered as tears formed in her eyes. “But when we meet again, everyone will be forced to see it! They’ll see how beautiful our connection is! Our friendship will make people jealous! Make them all wish they were you!”

I quietly laughed and bobbed my head.

“As long as it makes you happy, sure,” I concluded.

“It will. Fae love observing the emotional responses of people, especially shifters. It’ll make all of this worth it,” she vowed. Then she leaned in closer to whisper, “Then no one will break us apart again. We can be together, and make loads of friends, and then we’ll both be wolves too! Everything will work out and we’ll live happily ever after.”

“You sure no one will interfere?” I asked hesitantly as the fear of the man who pushed me off the cliff drifted into my mind.

“No one will interfere, Willow,” she vowed as her eyes twinkled like rainbow jewels. "You’re the final piece in my destiny, Willow, and when I finally sit upon the throne, no one will dare hurt you."

She released my hands and offered her pinky.

“Pinky promise?”

My smile couldn’t be wider as I slowly nodded my head.

“Pinky promise,” I agreed and added, “and we get to run in the fields of Faerie.”

She laughed and nodded her head.

“We’ll have our own pack! We’ll all run together happily.”
