"Time for you to fucking die!” Lorsan snarled and charged at me. I didn’t move a muscle but braced my body for what I knew was approaching.

This guy wanted to show how strong he was, so I’d let him beat the shit out of me for one solid minute.

“Two minutes left!” Alpha Memphis announced, and that seemed to be the trigger to Lorsan’s punching assault as he began to punch me right in the face before moving down to my chest and stomach.

I braced for it like a champ, and he barely got grunts out of me as I stood my ground to the best of my ability. Each angle was brutal, reminding me of my training days as my trainer punched the shit out of me for shits and giggles, but unlike back then when I was a novice when it came to pain, I was now one who held immense endurance to the agonizing torture.

I didn’t need to look in Willow’s direction to feel her concern. The building apprehension matched with waves of worry only made me want to smile.

How similar all of this felt to that very day that made such a negative impact on my life.

To only be an illusion that danced with my emotions.

The pain I was feeling now only felt numb in comparison to the years of sadness, uncertainty, and cruel judgment I’d received and delivered to myself.

The whispers and haunting words from my peers who looked at me in a different way.

Who stared at me like I was a free killer on the loose.

The next round of punches was directed at my head, which was a bit laughable even though it was indeed painful.

“Jayce,” Willow’s voice barely hit the air, but I heard it crystal clear. I knew I had about ten seconds left, and this fucker was doing exactly what I wanted him to.

Keep on punching, buddy. Hit that spot.

I didn’t think he’d do it, but when I least expected it, I heard the very loud ‘crack’ sound that surely was my skull cracking.

“Fuck,” Malachite cursed. "He did not just crack his fucking skull!”

“Fuck. Jayce?” Willow called out louder now, but I was zoning them out. I wouldn’t be able to focus the way I’d like if I had to worry about my Rebel.

This was the one time I’d let myself ignore her, just so I could redeem myself in the best way.

“I guess I’m in charge of making sure you don’t lose your sanity,”my wolf declared as I crouched down as if I was succumbing to Lorsan’s blows.

You’ve never let me down before.

If I’d relied on him back then, things would have been different —not like it mattered anymore.

“One minute left,” Alpha Memphis declared, and that was my cue to lose it.

“My turn.”My voice sounded like a monster hiding in the depths of a black closet — frightening enough to make Lorsan pause in his punching spree to look down at me and meet my grinning gaze.

Or maybe he was looking into the hollow sockets of my skull face.

The way his face paled while his eyes grew wide only encouraged my rise as I acted like all those punching circuits didn’t do a bloody thing to me.

Flames ignited from my flesh, leaving the caved space in stunned silence as the temperature spiked immensely.

I cracked my neck from left to right, ensuring Lorsan could see exactly where he’d cracked as I pointed to the part of my head that was probably bleeding before my shift.

Tapping it, I enjoyed the sound my fingertip made against the bone surface, almost like tapping the exterior of a hollow bowl.

"That’s all you’ve got?”I dared to ask, noticing how my flesh had literally melted and showed the bare bones of my skeletal structure."You see, this is why you shouldn’t start battles you can’t fucking win.”

Lorsan took a few steps back, his body trembling like a sheet hanging in the middle of a storm.

I couldn’t help but look to my left, my eyes locking onto Willow’s just to admire the amazement in her eyes. I guessed this was technically the first time she’d seen me in this form.
