“Probably because I’m on the Vile Queen’s hit list.”

We both scrunched our faces as we glanced a little over to see Malachite moving like my spell hadn’t worked.

“Okay, so is everyone just pretending to be frozen or what?” I asked them as my eyes darted between them.

“Time magic doesn’t affect me if I notice it fast enough,” Amos disclosed and looked to Malachite. “I have no clue about him.”

“I’m immune to it.”

“Immune to time magic?” I asked and tried to focus on breathing properly.

“Immune to any sort of magic nonsense,” he declared like it wasn’t a big deal. “Why else would Roberto have me as his Beta?”

“You’re immune to magic?” It seemed like a secret weapon.

“Frankly, I’m immune to everything,” Malachite revealed. “Bullets. Poison. Magic. If I’d been sitting next to Roberto the night of the runway, I would have easily jumped in front of you and taken the bullet. Probably would hurt like a bitch, but I wouldn’t die.”

“Damn,” I whispered and pouted my lips. “Why the fuck am I being a punching bag when you could have faced Felicia?”

He grinned. “You’re Alpha, remember?”

“Hmph. Alpha with a Bulky Immune-flaunting Beta.”

“She’s pretty cute when she’s jealous,” Amos randomly commented to Malachite, who shrugged. “The swollen cheek and bloody nose add to the attractiveness.”

“True,” he agreed.

“I’m literally holding time with some poison dagger inches from my face and you two are complimenting how hot I look bloody and wounded,” I summarized and glared their way. “If this is your way of trying to get me into your beds, let me be the only one to tell you, it's not working.”

Amos actually chuckled with a taunting grin on his face while Malachite smirked.

“We tried,” Amos muttered and Malachite’s grin only further spread across those lips of his.

“Ugh! What’s the plan?!” I snapped as I really did struggle to continue holding the spell. “I…really can’t do this for long.”

“Avoid her attack, corner her until she’s desperate to get the final move, and then let her see me from the corner of her eye. She’ll hit me with that dagger head-on while taking your final blow,” Malachite summarized.

“You really want to get hit by a poisonous dagger?” I actually feared for the immune Beta.

“You want the weapon,” Amos spoke up as his eyes narrowed in actual curiosity. “Why?”

“That’s our golden ticket,” Malachite declared and looked far too pleased with how things had gone. “I knew she’d play dirty. That’s her playing dirty by stealing that dagger that’s owned by the Vile Queen herself.”

“Wait. Seriously?” I gasped as my eyes widened. “It’s owned by her?”

“Owned and empowered. Vile Serpent Poison is one of the oldest poisons in our universe. Only those who lived right when magic was created and founded in these lands by the Phoenix family could have access. That literally narrows it down to two families who’d have access to such venom, and even with their ranks, it would cost a damn fortune to obtain.”

“Two families,” Amos whispered, and something clicked from the way his eyes lit up. “Phoenix and Clementine.”

“Back then, the strongest families in the supernatural ranks. Now narrow it down to the one we’re having a lot of trouble with.”

“Clementine,” I whispered. “So the Coven…wait.” Then I realized his true motive. “You’re trying to prove Aurelia innocent?”

“We’re not possibly going to believe Aurelia had the balls, money, and connections to be able to shoot you with one of the rarest bullets in the weapon’s industry in public with no backup plan. She was obviously set up by someone who wishes for her to be eliminated for good while severing the bond between the Phoenix Empire and the Clementines. There’s only one person who is desperate to break your friendship, especially now that Amos is in the picture.”

“The Vile Queen,” I concluded. “You want to claim the weapon and analyze it with the same method they did with the pistol used to shoot at me.”

“It would show different magic energies, which would prove the pistol was from the Vile Queen,” Amos acknowledged.
