CHAPTER 12

ARROW

Iwas hoping to walk Silver back after her class, but when I got there, she was gone. Clara told me how much she loved her, and that she would be amazing. I hope she’ll be able to handle everything after her ascension. Becoming a ruler is a lot of work, not to mention all the threats she’ll have to endure. That's what we’re here for, though I can’t help but hope that maybe she could be more for us. I see the way the other guys act around her; I know Wells is already head over heels. I’m still wary, but from what I’ve seen so far, she's just a girl. Not devious at all.

Just wish I could see what's going to happen over these next few months. Somehow when she’s near, my sight is blocked. This has never happened before. I need to call my Uncle and ask him, but I don’t want him notifying the council of any issues.

Having the sight, I see many options, courses that may take place. But the future is never certain; any little thing can change it.

That's why I only use my gift as a guide. Some days, I'm envious of the others' powers. While I get uncertainty and often predictions of people's deaths, they get emotions and mind control. I would love to have flames, or the ability to control people's thoughts and dreams. My parents always said that one day my gift would grow into something unknown—something incredible—but I'm still waiting for that day.

Donovan catches up to me about a mile from the house.

“Hey man, think we can sneak away just for a few hours? I need to expel some of this build-up. I almost set Winnie’s hair on fire after her stunt in the cafeteria. Can’t believe she did that, and out in the open.” He looks at me and I can tell he’s close to exploding. He’s shaking with rage.

I pull him toward the woods where we practice—it’s warded to keep the nons out.

“Text Wells and see if he wants to come too,” I tell him.

He groans loudly, then grabs me in a tight hug. “Thank you, brother.” I hold him for a few moments, waiting until he stops shaking.Yeah, note to self: we need to do this at least twice a week.

“Come on, man. I’ll conjure some targets for you to hit.”

He laughs and gives me a big smile, then pulls out his phone to send Wells a quick message to meet us. “Fuck yes, let’s do this,” he says, showing me the thumbs up he got in response.

I follow him to the clearing, and create him a few targets. He pulls a blindfold out of his back pocket, placing it over his eyes. Such a show off. He points his finger like he's shooting a gun and a flame erupts, burning a hole in the center of the target.

I sigh and watch, wishing I could do something like that. I do have the ability to control wind, which can come in handy, but fire is just so cool.

I might as well use some of my energy as well. I may not be able to do exciting things like shoot fire, but I can see what's holding Wells up.

My fingers tingle, and I close my eyes, concentrating.

My spirit leaves me, and I’m looking at my body. I move back toward the house.

Wells is in the kitchen with Silver. She leaves him and moves to her room. I must have missed something big. He's standing there with a goofy smile on his face, staring at her open door. I move farther down the hall and watch her as she sits on the edge of the bed and stares at the hall. What is she waiting for?

After a minute, she sighs, shoulder slumping. She grabs a journal from next to the bed, and leans back on her pillows, cracking it open. Why does she look so sad? I move back to the hall and watch as Wells puts his shoes on and opens the front door, glancing over his shoulder once more. He shakes his head, then steps outside.

I take deep breaths, bringing myself back to my body. Astral projection is cool, but it takes a lot of my energy.

Donovan has removed the blindfold and is now inspecting his targets.

“Wells is on his way,” I shout to him and he gives me a grin. I conjure up a lawn chair and plop down, getting comfortable. Knowing these guys, we’ll be here a while.

“What’s up, motherfuckers?” Wells calls, entering the clearing. I stand and give him a fist bump. He’s grinning from ear to ear, and vibrating with energy.

The next moment, Donovan is dripping wet and pissed off. “Really, man?” he shouts.

I wave my hand and dry him off using my air magic.

“Thanks, Arrow,” Don says, giving Wells the evil eye.

“What? You were all flamey—I had to put it out. Fire hazard and all that. Don’t you remember those visits from Smokey the Bear, about forest fires and shit?” Wells teases.

Don gives him a once-over. “Why do you look so happy? Did something happen?”

I think back to what I just saw and jump up. “Wait, did you and Silver hook up?” I ask him, walking over to where they are.
