CHAPTER 18

Silver

He kissed me! I can’t believe Jaxon Arrow just kissed me! In Target, of all places. What is happening right now?

I move down the aisles, randomly tossing things into the cart. My mind is in a fog. I hear chuckles behind me, and turn.

“Do you really need men’s boxers, Silver?” He quirks an eyebrow, taking the package out of the cart. My eyes widen and he laughs harder.

“Yes. I like sleeping in them. Is that a problem?” I sass back.

“No. No problem at all. Actually, I think it’s kinda hot, but I don’t think XL will fit you.” He grabs a medium pair and tosses them into the cart, before coming up behind me to whisper in my ear, “You know, I could just give you a pair of mine.”

I shiver and he laughs, backing away.Who is this guy? What happened to my sweet, friendly Jax? Wait... my?

“Anything else?” he asks, bringing me back from my thoughts.

I look in my cart and laugh loudly.Oh my god, what did I buy?

“I’m sorry, Jax. You have my mind all jumbled... I need to go through this, but yep. I believe I’m done.”

He steps around the cart and takes out the box of ‘Extra Large Magnums Value Pack,’ giving me a look. I’m dead—my face turns so red.

“Um, yeah. You can remove those,” I squeak, then bury my head in the cart, pulling out other ridiculous things I don't need. When I’m finally done, I realize I never got my snacks, but at this point I’m desperate to go get that coffee and talk.

I’m walking over to check out, when Jax bumps into someone he knows. I think she may be one of Winnie’s friends. She’s pretty, with her beachy curls hanging perfectly over her shoulders. I feel a wave of jealousy and anger come over me.Whoa. Where did that come from?

I leave them behind while I go to pay. When the cashier hands me the receipt, I look back—they’re still chatting. I don’t want to be rude, but he owes me a conversation. I walk up to them and Jax’s green eyes light up, making the girl spin and give me a look. Not quite an evil glare like Hazel, but close. She purses her lips, and crosses her arms. I’m just waiting for the foot stomp.

“Are you ready to go?” I ask Jax softly. He gives me a nod and takes my hand, making me gasp from the tingles running down my arm.

“I’ll see you later, Kaci,” he says to the girl, before pulling me outside to his bike.

“She seems familiar. Does she hang out with Winnie?” I ask Jax, trying to get him to tell me about her in a subtle way.

He hands me my helmet, and I hand him the bags. “Yeah, she's part of her pack. We dated back in high school, but now we’re just friends,” he explains, shrugging. He unzips a saddlebag and my eyes pop wide.

“Um Jax, what isthat?”

He looks up at me in confusion. “What is what?”

I point to the black lace dress, dagger, random herbs, a cauldron, and... is that a skull? I gulp and take a step back.

He freezes and stares at me a moment. “You can see that?” he asks in a shaky voice.

Um, I mean it is right there... Was I not supposed to see it? Is he into some freaky Satanic shit or something?

“Kinda hard to miss. Is there something I need to know?” I take another step back and look around the parking lot.

“You weren't supposed to see that,” he murmurs quietly, shaking his head. Suddenly, he laughs loudly, putting me more on edge. “I mean, it was supposed to be a surprise.” He reaches for my hand.

“A surprise for what? Do I need to be initiated into some cult to live with you guys?”

He nervously laughs again. “You and your sassy mouth. No, babe—it’s for Halloween. Wells and Don kinda go all out, sometimes a little too overboard if you ask me. It’s their favorite holiday.”

I feel my shoulders relaxing and I let out a breath of relief. That makes sense. “Oh, okay. Halloween was my brother’s favorite time of year too." I take a small step closer to him. "They do know it’s not for like another four months though, right?”

Taking my face in one of his palms, he lays his forehead on mine. “I really want to kiss you right now,” he whispers. I know I shouldn’t until we talk, but I raise my chin just a little and press my lips to his. He pulls back and groans. “Let’s go get that coffee.”
