“I don’t know, one of you must have told me.” I give him a nonchalant shrug, and tug his hand, getting him to continue on. “Now come on, I don’t want to be out here all night.”

He hesitates, before following, a bit reluctantly.

I turn on the light app on my phone, and start looking through the brush. The sun is starting to set; soon it will be dark.

“Kitty, kitty, kitty,” I coo, and wait.

Jax mumbles something under his breath, but it’s too quiet. I turn to ask him to repeat it, when a large Bengal cat pops out from under the foliage. I jump in excitement.

The cat is so damn cute, with brown and black stripes adorning his body. His hair looks so soft; I just want to snuggle him.

“I knew it!” I shout, startling the kitty—making it back away, like it might take off. “No! I'm sorry... come here, sweet baby.” I crouch down slowly and wait for it to come to me. “You are so, so adorable, I just want to squish you.”

It hesitantly comes closer and sniffs my hand, before purring and rolling on its back. I rub its belly for a second, then pick it up, snuggling it to my chest. It’s not wearing a collar and out here in the middle of nowhere is a weird place for it to be—I don’t think it belongs to anyone. I just feel a strong urge to take it home and care for it.

“Sweetheart, come on. It's cold out here,” Jax says, after a few minutes of me just cuddling the cat. He chuckles. “Wells may not be allergic, but hehatescats. This is going to be fun.”

I take his hand—still cuddling the cat with my other arm—and let him lead us back to the house. The cat curls closer to me and sniffs my neck.

A tiny voice in my head whispers, “Took you long enough.”

I freeze, and look down at the animal purring against my chest, making itself comfortable.

Did I just hear your thoughts?

I am seriously losing my mind.

We get back to the house and Jax runs ahead to grab his keys, pointing out that we’ll need to run to town and get some supplies. I didn’t even think of that. Poor thing must be starving.

I walk into the kitchen with my new friend and Wells is standing there, making a sandwich. When he sees me, he drops his knife.

“What... What isthat?” he asks in an appalled voice, looking at the helpless little kitty.

I take a step closer and he freezes.

“My new pet. Isn’t he just the sweetest?” I say in a soft, adorable, ‘you love me’ tone.

He goes back to making his sandwich, takes a bite and looks at me again, grimacing.

“Nope, not going to happen. I don’t care how cute you look right now, Snow. You are not bringing that flea-ridden thing in this house,” he says flatly.

“But babe, he needs me. How can you say no to this face?” I relax my arms and the cat pops its head up to look at him.

“No, Snow. I’m sorry. Plus if Alara finds out we have a pet, we could get kicked back into the dorms. I amwaytoo old for dorm bullshit.”

I give him a pout, and he looks away.

“That’s not fair. You know what your pout does to me.”

Jax comes back with his wallet and keys and gives me a look. “Ready to go?”

I pout on the verge of tears. His eyes soften and he looks over at Wells. “Man, don’t make her cry. I hate seeing her tears.”

I hand the cat over to Jax and move closer to the grumpy grouch in front of me. I rub my hand down his chest, stopping right on his waistband, and place my other hand behind his head, gently pulling his hair.

“I know what you're doing, babe. It’s not going to work.”

I can hear Jax trying to hide his chuckles behind me. Stepping closer to Wells, so we’re chest to chest, I pull his head down to look at me.
