“So, dinner?” I prompt her.

“Whatever you’d like. I’m starving.”

I pull out of the parking lot and take a right—I know just the place. We soon pull into Gio’s Pizzeria and Pasta. I step out, moving around to open her door.

She glances one more time at the sleeping cat, before taking my hand. “He’ll be fine. I lowered the windows a crack, and it's a cool night. Not too hot, not too cold. Plus, we won’t be very long, right?”

I shut the door behind her and she winces. “Shhh, you’ll wake him,” she scolds me.

I can’t help but imagine her as a mother, yelling at me to not wake the kids.Whoa... where did that come from?

She leans up and gives me a quick kiss, before pulling back and looking at me. “Where did you go just now? I lost you for a minute.”

I sigh and run my hand through my hair, before pulling her to the door. “Just tired, babe. It’s been a long day.”

She seems satisfied with that, and follows me as I make our way inside. I haven’t been here in a while but it still smells incredible. I head toward a booth in the corner—it’s not a busy night, but I’d like some privacy. I stand beside the table and gesture. “Is this okay?”

She gives me a kiss on the cheek, before taking a seat. “This is perfect, Jax.”

Curious, I have to ask, “Why do you call me that?”

She looks confused? “Call you what? Jax?”

I nod and she giggles.

“Everyone else calls me Arrow, but you call me Jax. Why is that?”

“Becauseeveryone else calls you Arrow,” she says with a wink.

I chuckle and shake my head. “I like that you call me Jax. The only other person was my mom.” I relax back into the booth opposite her and sigh. “It’s nice.”

Leaning closer, she takes my hand. “Tell me about her.”

I look up, shocked. “You want to know about my mom? Why?”

“Because obviously you loved her, and she was a big part of who you are today. Why wouldn't I want to know about her?” she says, rubbing her thumb over my knuckles. This girl never stops surprising me.

“She was amazing. Warm, gentle, always willing to help someone. She became a vet, because she hated seeing animals hurt. I remember she loved to bake—the house always smelled delicious. She would have loved you,” I finish, with a smile on my face.

Silver slides out of the booth and over to my side, leaning against my side in support. “She sounds amazing, Jax,” she whispers.

The waitress suddenly appears, placing our menus down in front of us. “Hey, sorry about the wait! My name is Penny. What can I get you to drink?”

I look down at Silver and she gives me a smile before looking at Penny.

“I’ll take a Coke, and an order of fried cheese sticks, with a side of buffalo sauce please,” she says.

“I’ll take a strawberry milkshake and a water, thanks,” I tell the waitress, not taking my eyes off of the kindest woman I’ve ever met, besides my mother. She really would have loved her.

“Sure thing. I’ll be right back with your drinks,” Penny, replies, before walking away.

I lean forward to check out the menu. “So what do you like on your pizza?” I ask.

Silver scrunches her nose and thinks. “Everything but anchovies. Not a fan of the salty little buggers,” she says with a shudder.

Marry me.I shake my head and smile.

“Perfect. Supreme it is.”
