“Get the fuck in the car!” Gravel shoved me behind him and jerked a panicked look at the shooters. It was all to save me. I stumbled backwards, watching one of the assassins stop and turn, his dark eyes finding mine before he lifted his gun. But Gravel was there, Glock kicking back with aboom!Taken was dead…and it was all because of me. How many more…how many more?

“Lazarus!” The Explorer shot forward, Dad now behind the wheel. “Get in the car!”

The assassin screamed as Gravel’s shot found its mark. I glanced over my shoulder as I lunged for the open rear door of our fourwheel drive as two oncoming cars slowed and came to a stop, watching the bloodbath play out.

“You okay?” Gravel sucked in hard breaths, charging up behind me.

“Yeah.” I climbed into the car and yanked the door closed as Gravel climbed in the front.

“Go,” Gravel urged Dad.“Go.”

“What thefuckwas that?” Dad barked over his shoulder as he punched the accelerator, driving me against the seat. “You could’ve gotten yourself killed!”

I just sat there, staring at Taken as blood slowly seeped from the wound in his throat. I said nothing as we drove toward the bunker. Cars swept past. Dad and Gravel divided their attention between oncoming traffic and their mirrors as we headed toward the city.

“Fuck me,” Dad growled and combed his fingers through his hair. “I want them, Gravel. I want those bastards.”

“Don’t worry” Dad’s second-in-command answered. “We’ll get them.”

“The fuckingSalvatores,” I barked, my mind going to the only ones it could be.

Dad jerked his gaze to the rear-view mirror. Fear and sadness filled his gaze.

Gravel just shook his head. “The Salvatores? No, I don’t think so. They have no reason for an outright attack, besides…”

“I agree.” Dad shifted gears, glancing behind the passenger seat at Taken who was on the floor, slumped against the seat. “This wasn’t them. They wouldn’t risk breaking the code.”

“Word is it’s Scion,” Gravel added. “That sonofabitch has bad blood.”

Dad switched lanes as the traffic grew heavier. I sank against the seat, staring at Taken’s hollow gaze. Whoever it was…I’d fucking kill them…

Because a Rossi…avenges their own.

Two months ago…

I had to get out of here…away from these people…or die trying.

White masks haunted my every step as I strode through the massive glass sliding doors into the opulent foyer and kept walking, with my clutch firmly under my arm.

“Ms. VanHalen,” the receptionist spluttered, and shoved to her feet. “I…ah.”She glanced along the counter as I strode past, searching for support. “I wasn’t expecting you.”

“Of course you weren’t,” I muttered. “Because I never fucking come here.”

I strode toward the bank of gleaming elevators in the grand, expansive foyer of the VanHalen Building and pressed the button.

“Let me call up and see if your father’s available.”

It was almost a plea, but I didn’t answer as the gleaming stainless steel doors slowly opened and I strode inside. A man stepped around the open-mouthed receptionist after me. One brow rose as he took in the panicked woman. “Are you in?” he asked casually.

I just stepped forward and punched the button, watching the doors close.

“Apparently not,” he muttered.

My stomach clenched as I moved to the back wall and tried to breathe. The truth was, I hated this place. Hate those who worked here…hated the goddamn pretense of it all. They were puppets…every single one of them.Just like me.
