I pushed up on trembling arms, twisting until I found his gaze. “What if I want to worry?”

His brow furrowed for a second. A battle raged inside his mind, one that played out in the crystal blue of his eyes. “I went to see Damon Zakharov.”

I froze at the words, my heart throbbing hard in my chest. “You went to see him…why?”

“Why wouldn’t I?” he searched my gaze.

It wasn’t to check on his welfare, that was for sure.

“You went to threaten him,” I whispered, the heat of desire cooling instantly. “But he said something. He said something you didn’t like. Something that made you come back here…and…”

The corner of his mouth twitched. He didn’t need to say the words.

I knew.

Disgust bloomed inside me, cold and infernal, stealing away the traces of his love. I pushed away, and he didn’t fight me, letting me slide away from him on the bed and clutch the sheet to my chest.

“You’re with me now,” he said. “Not just in this apartment, but in the world outside when we leave this island.”

I flinched and found the truth burning in his stare. “You don’t know me,” I answered. “You don’t know my life. You don’t know my father. He won’t like it.”

“See, there’s one thing you need to learn about me, Princess.” That hardness was back again, sharp and cutting as he pushed up on strong arms. “I don’t give a fuck what anyone else thinks. I care about me…and it looks like I care about you. So, what doyouthink? You want to slum it with a Stidda?”

Slum it with a Stidda.

The savage street thugs that had earned a reputation for being blood-thirsty and deadly. This was my one chance to get away from Haelstrom Hale and my father. This was the one chance I had to protect me…and my baby.

Tell him…

The voice urged inside my head.

Tell him now…

I opened my mouth, the words welling in the back of my throat, desperate to escape…as his phone rang.

“Fuck,” Lazarus snapped, and shoved up from the bed. He rounded the foot and bent, grasping his jeans from the floor and tore his phone free before answering. “What is it? There was a fucking attack? Finley and Anna…shit, okay, I’ll be right there. Yeah…” he glanced my way. “I’ll tell her.I said I’ll fucking tell her,”he snarled, and ended the call.

“What is it?” Panic filled me. “What the hell happened?”

“There was an attack.” Lazarus lowered the phone and met my gaze. “Looks like Fin and Anna were caught in the middle. But they’re okay.”

“Oh, Jesus…” I whispered. “Are they hurt? I mean, Anna…is she hurt?”My mind raced, creating the kind of images my heart couldn’t handle.

“She’s alive, they’re both alive.” His voice softened, easing the blow of his words. “But Fin’s bodyguards…they’re gone.”

Oh, Jesus…oh, Jesus…The air rushed from me in an instant, leaving the room to sway.

“Whoa, there.” Lazarus grabbed hold of my arm, and pulled me against him. “It’s okay, Kat.”

His strong arms wrapped around me. I lowered my head to his chest as my phone made abeep, the sound barely audible. Still, I knew who it was…who italwayswas. He wouldn’t leave me alone…he’d never leave me alone.

“You’re okay,” Lazarus repeated, his hand splayed against my back, pressing my chest against his. “They’re alive, and you’re safe.”

“I want to see her.” The words slipped free. I lifted my head, finding his gaze. "I need to make sure she’s okay.”
