There was a shake of his head. “Not a good idea, Princess.”

But the bloody images in my head were relentless, the deafening sound of gunshots so loud, I flinched in his arms.

“Okay,” he muttered. “Okay, Kat. You won’t rest until you see for yourself that Anna is safe, will you?”

Relief swept through me as I closed my eyes. “Yes. I need to see her. I need to know…”

“Morning will be here in a few hours, daylight is better.”

“I want to go now, Lazarus.” I opened my eyes. “You don’t have to come…I can ask Logan.”

The bulging vein at his temple pulsed. “No,” he said with a shake of his head. “Get dressed. I’ll take you.”

I slipped my arms from around his body and stepped away, hurrying before he changed his mind. I had no clothes, none that were mine, at least, so I turned to the bathroom, found my panties and bra in a heap on the floor, and made my way into his closet.

There was something eerily familiar about rifling through his clothes. Something I couldn’t quite put my finger on as I bypassed the open safe with the gun sitting on the stack of bills.

Because I’d never felt like this before.

Never felt so…comfortable, not even in my own skin. I yanked a pair of black jeans from the hanger and slipped them on over my panties. A long-sleeved black shirt was next. I buttoned it, tied the ends into a knot, and stepped into the bedroom.

Lazarus was waiting with a leather jacket in his hands. He froze when he saw me. His eyes widened like I’d hit him in the chest. I took a step closer as his gaze drifted upwards.

“I hope it was okay I helped myself to your clothes?” I whispered, unsure.

He just swallowed hard and took a step closer, dropping the jacket in his hand against the edge of the bed. One hand cupped the back of my neck as the fingers of the other plunged through my hair. “Princess, you can help yourself to anything and everything I own. I have nothing…wantfor nothing, except for you.”

He lowered his head and I closed my eyes.

My body still hummed from his touch. But it warmed once more, welling in the pit of my belly and blooming outwards. He was saying something here, something that real words failed. I lifted my head and stared into his eyes. “Good, then I guess it’s time we discussed brands., I whispered, catching his smile in the corner of my eye.

He pulled away with a chuckle. “How about I just hand you my credit card and you get whatever you want?”

“What kind of limit are we talking here?” I joked, looking at the well-worn leather jacket waiting for me. A shiver raced through me as he picked it up from the end of the bed and held it out for me.

“Sky’s the limit for you, Princess.”

I just chuckled. Poor bastard, I’d send him broke within a month. Still, as he slipped his jacket over my arms, I inhaled the rich scent of leather andhim. There wasn’t a piece of clothing in the world that would smell like this.

And I didn’t want there to be.

He waited while I stepped into my flats, and held out his hand. It was the most natural feeling in the world to take it in mine, like we were made for that simple act. And as his fingers slipped between mine, that flutter deep inside my belly grew bolder.

We made our way downstairs. Both Logan and Freddy were waiting in the foyer, armed to the teeth. Freddy glanced at my hand in Lazarus’s, then met my gaze. He knew…he knew the truth and he was waiting for me to tell Lazarus. I swallowed the panic and looked away.

My pulse sped with the thought. The more I felt about Lazarus, the more that was on the line.

What would happen if he reacted badly?

If he was sickened by the thought of another man’s baby in my belly?

What would happen if he cast me aside?

I clenched my hand around his as we walked out into the night, heading toward the main building. Logan was at my side, his weapon in his hand. I felt a strange comfort in his presence, the kind of protection I’d never experienced before. Could I really put my trust in them? Trust them with my heart…and my life?

I thought about that as Lazarus led me forward. I lowered my head as the wind whipped strands of my unbrushed hair against my cheek. The cold wind seemed to cut through me, making me shiver.

As though Lazarus knew, he pulled me close and wrapped an arm around my shoulders. Heat filled my cheeks with the movement. He just met my gaze and smiled, the curl of his lips knowing. As though I was finally catching up with the way things were going to be for us.
