By the time she switched off the water and stepped out, her hair wrapped in one towel and her body in another, I was buttering the thick slices of bread and layering them with a couple of perfect leaves of lettuce and thick slices of tomato.

“That looks delicious,” she said, sliding onto a stool. “I’m starved.”

“See, we don’t need a chef.” I slid a perfect sandwich her way. “I cook, I clean…I beat the shit out of anyone who fucking touches you.”

She flinched at the last part and I kicked myself.Fucking idiot.I shifted focus, grabbing half of my sandwich and taking a mammoth bite. She ate with careful bites, chewing and swallowing, making her way through half of it before she waited.

I turned, opened the fridge, and grabbed a can of Pepsi before handing it her way.

“So, what will happen now?” she asked…then added. “With the island, I mean.”

I gave a shrug. “I guess it depends what the Commission decides, either we’re exposed here, or they want us to sit tight.”

“What does your dad say?”

I just gave a shrug, giving her my undivided attention. “I don’t think it really matters, here, there…I seem to have a target on my head. The only difference is, here weshouldbe able to see them coming.”

She popped open the can and took a swallow before placing it back down. “So, if we’re at risk even at home, then we should stay.”

“Unfortunately, Princess, it’s not up to us,” I explained. “The island is run by the Commission. They decide what happens.” She said nothing, just pushed her plate away slowly. “You don’t want to go back, do you?”

Careful…

That voice warned in my head.

“No, I don’t,” she answered. “And I won’t be…”

I widened my eyes at the words. “You got somewhere else to be, Princess?”

She swallowed, her gaze fixed on mine. “Yeah, I think I do.”

Fuck me, if my heart didn’t leap at the words. My phone gave abeepthis time. I reached over, grabbed it from the counter, and illuminated the message.

Dad: We need to talk.

I winced, then lifted my gaze to hers. “I gotta take this, Princess.”

She just gave a nod, watching me as I strode from the kitchen and into the living room, pressing dad’s contact. But it didn’t matter what I was doing, I was still aware of how she slipped from the stool and strode into the bedroom again.

“Laz,” Dad answered. “What’s the situation there?”

The situation?

“The situation is fucked,” I answered the only way I could. “Another attack. This time they came after Finley.”

“Jesus,” he groaned, and his audible exhale was a roar in my ear. “We know for sure he was the target?”

The frantic gaze of Finley Salvatore filled my mind. Was I sure he was the target? Something inside me saidno.“I don’t…no.”

“No?” A creak echoed behind him, as though in this moment I had his undivided attention. “So, who do you think the target was?”

I think she’s in trouble.Finley’s words echoed in my head. And she’s about to do something fucking stupid. Something I won’t be able to fix.“To be honest, I’m not sure there was a target. Something went on last night, something no one wants us finding out"That Anna Shaw isn’t just any rich brat…that she’s the Ghost, the most cunning money launderer the dark Mafia world has ever known. If Finley Salvatore thought I’d forgotten what I’d heard in that classroom, then he was very much mistaken. I remembered alright…and I knew exactly what was at stake here for the Salvatores. “I can’t be certain.”

“Well, then I’m going to need you to be certain here, Laz. Especially as you’re my proxy at today’s meeting.”

“Meeting?” I snapped back to attention. “What damn meeting?”

“Satellite linkup. I can’t be there, so I’m giving you a chance here,” he explained.
