But they didn’t fall back, and the thunderous sound of heavy boots smacking the concrete grew louder, until it was all I could hear. I ground my teeth and drew Laz’s leather jacket tight around me as the wind whipped strands of my hair free.

“I bet you’re missing your boyfriend right about now.” The low snarl came from behind me, far too close to my ear.

I flinched at the closeness and jerked my gaze to his.

Dark brown eyes bored into mine.

Forbidding and foul.

Pitiless…right to his soul.

“Get the fuckback, now,”I commanded, and hurried my steps, trying to put distance between us.

Without quickening his, he bore down on me, hunting me like a predator.

My heart hammered as I lifted my gaze to the front doors of my building.

“Yeah, I bet you’re wishing he was here, right about now,” the guard growled at my back as I stepped around the towering palms in the garden outside my building. “We came for him…but fuck, we’ll just take you instead.”

A hand clamped over my mouth, rough fingers smashing my lips against my teeth.

For a second, I didn’t understand what was happening.

For a heartbeat, I lost all thought.

Until something inside me screamedFIGHT!

I sucked in a hard breath, drawing in the fetid scent of his hand. But under that…was a tang that made my blood run cold.Bitter and suffocating,a scent I’d tasted in the back of my throat before.

When I was younger.

When I'd started to fight.

I bucked my body, howling with rage as my feet were lifted.

“Get her!” the guard barked.

Cruel hands grasped my legs and fingers dug into my calves as I howled and screamed…and the world started to blur.

“Huuuurrrrryeee!”The word slurred in my mind.

That panicked feeling in my belly moved deeper. It was all I held onto, all I grasped.

Until the face of my protector roared to the surface.

Blue eyes blazing with hate.

Lazarus!I screamed in my mind.LAZARUS!

Lazarus

“So let me get this straight.” Adrian Bernardi leaned forward on his desk and stared down the camera. “You can’t track down these bastards who've attacked us, nor can you put the damn island on lockdown?”

Mateo Ristani, the island’s Commander and protector, answered carefully. “At this time, no. In the wake of last night’s attack, and other circumstances outside our control, we’ve suffered extensive casualties. So, until our personnel levels are replenished, we just don’t have enough guards.”

“Thenget them,”Bernardi snarled.
