“Now, look into the camera,” he growled, and grabbed my arm. “And plead for your life.”

My lips curled, the hate blazing inside me now, tearing me from that haze. “Fuck you,” I snarled. “Fuck you!”

His grip was cruel. But I had a lifetime of rage burning through me.

And I wasn’t anywhere near done.

“What the fuck do you mean, they weren’t your men?” I took a step, my gaze boring a hole through the Commander as he stared at the screen on his phone.

I watched two men escort her from the building…two men not more than a step away from her, and they didn’t come back.

“They aren’t mine,” Mateo repeated, lifting his gaze to mine. “I know every man in my employ and these men…they’re not mine.”

They’re not his…not his…I tore my gaze from his and stumbled toward the doors of the building.

“Laz!” Freddy called, but I was already running…already driving my boots into the pavement, already charging toward the only place she’d go to…her apartment.

Nothing else mattered in this moment.

Not the breath in my lungs.

Or the agony that cut like a knife.

Nothing.

I rounded the edge of the garden, my boots skidding on the concrete before I lunged again, driving my body toward the doorway…until I caught the glint of something under a palm.

Thunder roared not more than two steps behind me as I stopped, sucking in harsh breaths.

“Laz,” Logan called my name.

But I couldn’t move, frozen by the dark outline as the palm leaves moved, revealing her phone.

Logan followed my gaze and sucked in a deep breath. “Jesus,” he murmured and stepped closer.

Footsteps moved in, and the world seemed to blur. Logan lifted his head and barked orders, but all I could see was that cracked screen as her phone illuminated…ten missed calls…now eleven.

Movement came all around me as the Commander skidded to a stop at my side. Orders were given, panic whipped like a savage gust around me. I knelt, grabbed her phone from the soft, rich dirt, and pressed the screen. Something white caught my eye in the distance, closer to the doors. I left them behind, strode closer, and picked it up. “It’s her keycard,” I muttered, my words strange and detached.

The Commander jerked his gaze toward one of the other men. “Search the building.” They rushed in, leaving me behind, Freddy and Logan at my side.

“We’ll find her,” Logan reassured.

I met the brother’s eyes, that hard glint shining with malice. “If she’s dead…”

His jaw bulged under the strain as he closed the distance in a heartbeat and grabbed my shoulders. “She’snotdead, Lazarus. We’ll find her…you hear me? We…will…find…her.”

I nodded as theslamof the stairwell door echoed through the space. I’ll find you…you hear me, Kat? I’ll find you.

“Say the goddamn words.” My abductor loomed over me, his eyes nothing more than menacing pools in the faded light.
