“You’re going to make me wish I’d shot you, aren’t you?” my attacker barked in my face as he slammed the door.

“I didn’t think she was going to fight like that,” the other one exclaimed.

“This one’s a fucking hellcat.” My attacker clenched his grip tighter. “Lucky she’s not going to be our problem for much longer.”

I gasped and wheezed, stumbling to the side as he wrenched me by my throat.“Please,”I croaked as they dragged me through the open gates and through the door of the hangar.

The world seemed to bow and scrape for Haelstrom Hale. He moved in like a plague, spilling out of the conference room to infect the rest of the building, demanding to be taken to the island’s control room and to speak with the guard behind the monitors.

And all the while, I hated and seethed, rolling those words around in my head.Make no mistake, boy, when this is over, she won’t belong to you.Freddy and Logan stood at my back as Hale left with Kat’s dad at his back. It was easy to see why the woman had hidden so many fucking secrets from me. Dark secrets.Chilling secrets.

They were a new breed, the filthy rich. A whole new fucking breed.

Mateo just stood there, watching as they slowly took over his building, and all the while, the smirking Damon Zakharov followed them around like a lovesick puppy. I watched as he strode past, tottering after them, his shit-eating grin stretching the corners of his swollen lips.

“Nice teeth,” I muttered as he passed.

That grin faltered, but the cruel gleam in his eyes remained as he strode through the door. I followed with my gaze until we were the only ones left in the room. “I fucking hate him.” The words echoed deep within my belly. “I hate all of them.”

Logan just cleared his throat carefully and answered, “They’re her family.”

“Not Hale,” I spat. “No fucking way.”

“Did you know about that?” Freddy muttered, taking a step into view.

I stared at the open door as remnants of the last week hit home. Had I known she was somehowtaken? She’s Hale’s, but he’ll let you have her, at least until they’re married…Zakharov’s words whispered from that pit of emptiness inside me. “Not from her, no.”

“So she didn’t tell you anything about that Hale?” he muttered, and scowled. “Makes perfect fucking sense then.”

My senses piqued, forcing my focus to narrow in. “What makes sense?”

There was a battle in his eyes, then a shake of his head, before he turned away.

“What makes sense, brother?”I strode forward and grabbed his arm.

“Nothing.” He tugged his arm free. “Forget I spoke.”

But I couldn’t forget. Not what he said or the way he was avoiding it now. The way he was avoidingme.I stepped in front of him, forcing his gaze to mine.“Tell me,Freddy.”

Nothing else mattered in that moment.

Nothing mattered but unearthing what he had to say.

I wanted every secret of hers, neededthem like I needed air to fucking breathe. I craved every quiet smile, every whisper of her fucking scent. I thirsted for any trace of her, no matter how little it was. Because without them…without them…she slipped away from me.

Freddy saw that hunger, saw how crazed I’d become in the wake of her abduction. He saw how that slithering thing inside me was rising to the surface, pushing me to the edge…and that was never a good thing.

He licked his lips and cast a nervous glance at Logan, who just nodded, urging him on.

Freddy was all I cared about in that moment, thebrotherand the torment he wrestled with, torment that made my fucking pulse stutter and my breath catch.

“I don’t know for sure, okay?” he started, then dragged his fingers through his hair, shifting from one foot to the other like a jumpy motherfucker.

“Just fucking spit it out,”I snapped, unable to stand the fucking tension.
