I flinched at the roar, and waited. Some of the women hurried forward, cowering as they crawled on hands and knees. The guard with the gun scowled as he watched them, before he stopped at me. Time seemed to stand still as movement came all around me. Even my careful companion pushed up on her hands and knees, before ducking lower before she moved.

“Move, rich bitch,”the man with the keys snarled before he bent, grabbed me by the arm, and hauled me to my feet, driving me toward the open door.

But I wasn’t the last one to reach the opening. I heard thewhackof a blow behind me and glanced over my shoulder, to find the steely stare of the muttering woman. I tried to get my feet to work properly and stepped out into the biting wind.

It was almost the same small, unmanned hangar as the one in Mauritius. The shed was larger, the fence newer. But there was no one around us to help. No one who would see me and know who I was. It was just the plane and us.

“Keep walking,” a man barked on the asphalt.

I made my way down the stairs as the rest of the women wrapped their arms around their bodies and walked toward the looming shed.

A scream ripped through the air behind me before I caught movement.

The woman who spoke Spanish lunged, tearing across the tarmac in a desperate attempt to get free. One of the men took off after her as the glint of a gun shone in the corner of my eye.

Thecrackwas deafening as the woman was thrown forward and hit the ground.

She didn’t move…

Not a flinch.

Not a tremor.

Blood seeped from her body, spilling outwards.

They killed her…

They killed her.

“Keep walking.” The captor with the gun stared at me.

I walked, tearing my gaze from the dead woman, and hurried to the others.

He took over her building, her apartment, and her goddamn existence, writing his own set of narratives. I couldn’t stand it. Every time I turned around, Haelstrom fucking Hale was there, with his pristine fucking suits and his beady eyes.

Eyes I saw everywhere I turned.

“Laz,” Logan murmured, drawing my attention from Hale.

I flinched jerked my gaze from the window of her apartment and the movement behind the glass. I hated that he was up there, hated how he could touch her things. Even Fin’s Anna didn’t like him, and she was the kind of person who likedeveryone. The corner of my mouth twitched as I fixed on the brother at my side.

“Let’s get back. Yeah?”

He waited for me to nod and follow, and I did, because I was desperate to do the unthinkable. I wanted to charge up there, shove my gun in his face and…and…kill him. Kill him because he stood in my way. Kill him because I saw it in every gleam of his fucking eyes. He'd taken a piece of her, carried it with him like it was wrapped in a handkerchief and tucked into his pocket.

I didn’t know what he had of hers. I prayed it wasn’t her heart. Becausethat, for me, was unthinkable. That was beyond anything I could fathom. I didn’t want to live in a world where she didn’t love me. I didn’t want to live in a world where her entire existence wasn’t narrowed down to the exact moment our worlds collided.

I swallowed a shudder, shoved my fists into my pockets and walked, following Logan as we headed back. Logan’s phone made abeepand he lifted it instantly, pressing the button. “Benj.”

Dad…

The sound of his name made my pulse react. I craned my head, listening to every word, every snatch of information. I thought he'd been silent, thought he didn’t care. But I was wrong. He’d been calling in every man he could, banging on doors with the Mauritian police, even waking Jugnauth, the damn Prime Minister, and dragging him out of bed, in the hopes we could tread where others couldn’t.

Others being Hale.
