“Tire marks out front said it was a new car, thick, heavy tread, four-wheel drive, at least. The guys are working on those in the area, seeing what information we can shake loose.”

“It’s them, isn’t it?” I glanced at Logan. “The two men from the picture, they’re the ones who took her.”

He just nodded. My hand shook as I gripped her shoe.

Two men like that. What they’d do to a woman like Kat.

“If they’ve been here a month, scouting out the place, then they’re professionals.”

Professionals.

Men who knew it wasn’t about her.

Men who were focused on the outcome.

And not a piece of pussy they could take at whim. I held onto that as headlights cut across the darkness outside and the earpiece of our guy crackled. “Looks like we’ve got company,” Ice muttered.

Car doors slammed outside before the crunch of boots on the ground sounded. Against the shining headlights pouring into the doorway behind me, came Hale.

Savage rage made his dark eyes appear like midnight pools. He scanned the room, finding Freddy, Logan, Ice…then me. He said nothing as he lowered his gaze to the shoe in my hand. But there was a flare of his jaw muscles before he met my gaze. “When were you going to tell me about this?”

When was I going to tell him?

How about never…does that work for you, motherfucker?I fought the urge to smirk. “When I had something to tell.”

He strode toward me and snatched the shoe from my hand.

I never wanted to beat a man into oblivion as much as I wanted to beat him for that shoe, that lone fucking shoe. The last trace of her I had. Until a thought hit me. How the fuck did he find out? “You had us tracked.”

The slow smile was chilling. “At least now we know exactly where we stand.”

He trusted me about as much as I trusted him.

A low hum stole his attention. He reached into his pocket and snatched a cell phone free in the blink of an eye. “Hale,” he barked. Like his name wasn’t an answer, but a weapon. One he wielded like a blade. “Are you sure? France. Yes, have it ready immediately. I’m on my way.”

He ended the call and with a smugness that sparkled like stars in his eyes, he murmured, “She’s on a cargo plane that headed to France in the early hours of this morning.”

France? Why the fuck was she taken to France?

“Give up, son.” Hale murmured, his voice soft and full of sympathy. “I’ll take it from here.”

Then he was gone, striding back through the doorway, his boots crunching on the dirt outside. It wasn’t until the car door thudded and the four-wheel drive had pulled away, that I realized he’d taken her shoe with him.

Just like that, he came, took, and left.

“I’m going to fucking kill him.” The words slipped free, hate-filled and hollow. “Hale is mine.”

I strode out of the cabin and into the night as Logan talked into the two-way, making his way toward an old Jeep. It hit me then, how Hale and I were worlds apart. I had money, more money than I could spend in a lifetime. But hewasmoney, just like Kat was money. Real money, the kind that sets you apart from everyone else. The kind of money where even the mere mention of your name opened doors.

The only thing the Rossi name opened…was a case full of guns.

We climbed onto the old four-wheel drive, with Ice behind the wheel. The engine started and the wheels spun. We were moving as Logan relayed the information. “Looks like a small hangar, an hour south of here.”

Ice gunned the engine as we tore along the dirt road, kicking up plumes of dust in our wake.

The further we drove, the lighter it grew outside. Darkened hues turned to vibrant color and, by the time the sight of a tall fence surrounding the small steel warehouse rose in the distance, we knew we were in trouble.

Hale was already in the air. His private jet had been waiting thirty minutes west of here. He’d driven straight there, not even bothering to check out the warehouse surrounded by warning signs.
