Stairs appeared in front of me. I lunged, grasped the railing, and climbed as two more men came from below. I jerked my gaze from them to Freddy as he lifted his gun and met my gaze.“Go…find her.”

Thecrackof a gunshot rang out. Freddy ducked before unleashing a fury of return gunfire.

I leaped, driving my body higher and higher, climbing as that shattering cry ended, leaving an empty silence behind. They were hurting her…terrorizing her.

Crack!

Crack!

The night was filled with the bark of guns. I climbed to the first level and ran toward where the sound had come from, pulling my gun out.

Boom!

A window shattered just in front of me. I spun, lifting my gun, as shadows rushed toward me. They seemed to come out of nowhere, spilling from darkened doorways to step into my path.Boom!A shot hit the steel railing as I took aim and pulled the trigger.

Boom!

Boom.

Boom.

The gun buckled against the webbing of my hand as I charged forward, firing. I hit once, then wide, unleashing my rage as her cries came once more, only this timeabove me.

“Fuck!”

I roared and spun, finding one of those fuckers rushing me. He hit me like a fucking truck. Arms like steel cables wrapped around me and drove me against the wall. But I was already pulling the trigger and screaming into the fucker’s face.

Boom! The sound was muffled between our bodies.Boom!Flashes of gunfire detonated around me as I pushed him backwards and he dropped. A cough from the asshole under me splattered blood across my cheek. All I heard was her cries as I lifted the gun and pulled the trigger.Boom.

I was shut down, cold…brutal. I fired until I couldn’t feel the kick in my hand, then stopped pulling the trigger. I didn’t know how many shots I had left…and I didn’t care.

I stepped away and raced for the stairs, taking three at a time as the savage wet sounds of fists on flesh came from below me. Fights and battles raged all around me, and still that driving desperation was howling with through me as I stopped climbing and raced forward.

The taste of blood filled my mouth as I breathed in. The warm slick across my face turned cold as I ran forward. I knew I must look like an animal. One look at me and I’d terrify her. But one look from her, and that was all I needed.

I only wanted to know she was safe.

Wanted to knowIwas the one to protect her.

To avenge her.

To give her freedom.

A light was on inside an apartment up ahead, softly spilling through the window. A woman’s moan came from inside, low, tortured, filled with agony.

That sound shattered something inside me.

The last fragile hold on the man I once was.

I was beyond that now, so far removed from anything that felt alive. I was cold now, cold, empty, slithering.I gripped the door handle and twisted, stepped inside the derelict apartment, and stopped.

She was strapped to a chair, bloody and beaten. Her face was a fucking mess, her long red hair spilled across her face as her head rolled. “Kat?” I whispered her name, but my voice was guttural and strange.

She blinked, then closed her eyes, unable to look at me.

They took her.

They hurt her.
