“Umm,wait,”the old man called behind us.

But there would be no more waiting…we’d waited long enough.

“I think you can pretty well expect they’ll kiss.” Benjamin Rossi consoled the stuttering priest. “Amongst other things.”

We left them all behind.

Family.

Friends who were family.

The world as we knew it.

I wrapped my arms around Lazarus’s neck as he carried me around the huge stone farmhouse to the driveway at the front. “Well,” I murmured. “I guess we should finish this.”

“There’s no finishing this, Kat,” he growled, striding toward the waiting black Chrysler. “Not now…not ever. I’ll spend the rest of my goddamn life making sure you know that.”

The chauffeur opened the rear door as we came close. But before Lazarus could lift me inside, he stopped and slowly lowered my feet to the ground. I tried to smother the wince, holding my breath as a flare of agony moved through my belly.

But no matter how hard I tried to keep him from noticing, he did anyway.

Hate moved through his eyes.

The kind of hate that scared me.

Vengeful…and relentless.

But this moment wasn’t meant for that. He pushed that part of his nature down, burying it under his love for me. And it was his love that shone through as he gently took my face in his hands and kissed me.

Kissed me like I was everything.

Kissed me like I was the world.

Kissed me like he never wanted to stop kissing me.

I lifted my arms, pulling him hard against me as the kiss deepened.

I’d never met a man like Lazarus, never felt this kind of shift inside me, and as he broke away, he smiled. “Are you sure?”

“Yes,” I answered. “Yes, I’m sure.”

I turned, ducked my head, and slipped inside. Lazarus climbed in after me, pulling me against his side. “Welcome to the rest of your life, Mrs. Rossi.”

I turned as the door closed, then the driver's door opened, and I took his hand in mine. The car started and pulled away and I forgot the rest of the world. The driver took us down to a small sandstone house at the far rear of the compound and pulled up on the pebbled driveway outside the front door.

The deep amber setting sun was darkening to black as we stepped out of the car and headed inside, closing and locking the door behind us. Logan would be outside the house tonight, and in the streets surrounding this small, quiet village, a team of ruthless men loyal to us would be waiting and watching.

We were safe tonight.

Safe from Hale.

Secure in our love.

There was a large dining table waiting for us, set for two. The delicious smell of food wafted out to greet us, making my belly rumble with hunger.

“You should eat first,” my husband said, glancing my way and leading me toward the table.

But it wasn’t food I wanted…not yet.
