But I couldn’t stop. I couldn’t answer. My panic was screaming…get out…get out…get out NOW!I picked Sophie up out of the pram, knocking the baby bag over and upending the contents. Baby bottles fell and hit the asphalt, two of them rolling into oncoming traffic.

“Shit!” I screamed. Reflexes took over, and common sense took a back seat. I lunged, bending to grab the bottles as they rolled.

“Leave them!”Gareth barked, striding forward to snatch one from rolling into the path of a car.

Sophie let out a wail, the sound only kicked that panic in my head. I pressed her head against my chest, bouncing as I caught a blur of black in the corner of my eye. Confusion flared as he headed toward us. Tall and broad, wearing a dark hoody. I froze, mid-rock, that deep, terror clawing its way from my past as he pulled his hand from inside the pocket of his sweater and pulled out a gun.

Boom!

I flinched with the sound, unable to move as Gareth stumbled backwards, his hand moving to his jacket.

Boom!

Gareth jerked his gaze to me, hie eyes wide with fear.“Get in the car now!”

He unleashed a roar, driving upwards and charged toward the gunman. My pulse was booming, the sound deafening as I lunged, making for the driver’s door and pressed Sophie against my chest. Until I realised…the keys…the goddamn keys.

BOOM!I stilledcold.

I stumbled backwards as the gunman rounded the rear of the four-wheel drive and stepped toward me. It’s him…him. The maniac from the Island. He’s back…and he’s back for me. Terrified thoughts filled my head as I turned around and ran.

My steps were like thunder, my terror, real. I held Sophie against my chest and scanned the street for anyone who can help me and screamed, “Someone help!”

Cars tore past me. One swerved narrowly missing me as I stumbled into the street. He was a snarl of savagery behind me. His heavy steps and his rapid breath were all I could hear. I darted around a parked car and lunged, driving myself forward. There were people in the park, a female jogger, a man with two small kids.“Please somebody help me!” I cried.

Boom!

The gunshot rang out, making those who watched run for their lives. I wrenched my gaze over my shoulder as he descended, grabbing me around the neck before he yanked me backwards. “I don’t think so.”

I screamed and fought, holding my daughter with one hand as I went for this face with the other. Instinct collided with savagery. One born in that filthy room on the other side of the world.

Instead of trying to get away—I turned on him, knocking those black sunglasses off as I went for his eyes, until he shoved the gun in my face.

“I will fucking kill you!”he roared.

Crack!

He bucked in front of me, stumbled sideways, his eyes narrowing on the man behind me. Gareth stood there, his shirt a mess. Blood streaming down his forehead and in his eye as he glanced my way. “Kat…run.”

I did, leaving him there, I stumbled backwards. The gunman let out a savage roar behind me but I was too busy running for my life. I kept Sophie close and hauled myself to the park’s entrance, desperation roaring inside me.

Laz…

I shoved my hand into my pocket, fumbling for my phone. My hands shook, and I dropped the goddamn thing as I tore along the path and around the balustrade. Stifling a scream of frustration, stopped and snatched it from the ground and risked a glance behind me before I drove forward once more.

They were fighting in the distance. Gareth was slammed against the side of the car as the attacker wrestled him for the gun until it went off with a muffledboom!

I froze at the sight, my gaze fixed on the gunman as Gareth’s knees buckled and he dropped to the ground. I didn’t wait for what was to come. Instead, I charged forward, sliding across the screen before I found his number.

My breaths were heavy. Sophie’s screams were shrill in my ears as Laz answered on the second ring. “Don’t tell me, they didn’t even care about the baby—”

“Laz!” I screamed his name.“Laz please help me!”

“Kat?” His tone went icy. That flicker of disappointment ripped away.

“There’s a man with a gun. I think… I think Gareth is dead.” My panicked words were nothing more than a roar. “It’s him Laz…it’s the man from the island.”

“Where are you?”
