Dazed, I felt my hold slipping…

No! No!I clawed for a hold, but it was too late. My daughter’s face was bright red as unleashed blood-curdling screams. And in a second, she was gone, ripped from my arms. I shoved forward, scrambling as she stumbled backwards.

“Give her back! Give her back to ME!”

He stepped toward me, punching out his fist wrapped around the gun once more. The blow catching me in the cheek. But I didn’t care about the agony. I didn’t care about my pain. All I cared about my daughter.

“Laz!” I screamed his name as my attacker lashed out once more, this time the blow caught me on the side of my head

Sparks ignited behind my eyes, I stumbled, my knees buckling, sending me crashing to the ground. Something warm seeped into my eye as I shoved, fell…then shoved again…only this time the world around me spun, turning gray.

In the gloom I saw the face of my attacker as he stared at me, his face a mask of cold, savagery.

Blink…

I willed myself forward, desperation driving through me, even as the gray darkened.

“Stay the fuck down.”My attacker’s words were warped and strange. “Stay the fuc—”

I tried to hold on. Tried to push myself up. But I couldn’t even keep my eyes open.

As my world narrowed, to a thin gray slit, I saw my daughter being carried away…in the arms of a stranger.

Kat

“Kat?”

I tried to open my eyes. Agony roared, making me whimper. Thunder filled my ears.Boom…boom. BOOM.

“Kat!”

Hands gripped me, forcing me to fight the agony. I cracked open my eyes, finding Laz as he ran, charging across some path toward me. For a second, I didn’t understand. “Laz?” I whispered.

He descended like fury, skidding to stop beside me, he swiped the mess from my eyes and jerked his gaze around. “Find my goddamn daughter!”

Freddy’s roar followed, barking orders.Find my daughter…find my daughter. The words meant nothing until fractured slices of my memory slid in, cutting me as they went.A man…gunshots. Gareth falling…then it all came rushing back to me and cold plunged through me, wrenching my eyes I open. “My daughter?”

Laz pulled me into his arms. “It’s all going to be okay. You hear me? It’s all going to be okay.”

But I didn’t want his comfort, I wanted my daughter. I shoved upwards, stumbling as I looked around. Memories of what happened blurred in my head. She was just here, right here in my arms. I lifted my shaking hands, the warmth of her was still there. Where is she?… Where is my daughter? I stumbled forward, a scream building in the back of my throat. I couldn’t stop it, I couldn’t do a damn thing other than let that sound out. With a sudden inhale, I unleashed a blood-curdling howl of agony.

Birds flooded from the trees, as terror and pain ripped through me. The few people that gathered witnessed the sound then looked away. But I couldn’t stop myself, not anymore.

I stumbled forward, tearing around. She was here, I knew she was here.

“Kat…” Lazarus tried to pull me into his arms.

I shoved him away, still I was desperate to look into his eyes. “Where is she, Laz?Where is our daughter?”

Pain moved through his gaze; his brows creased as the thunder of footsteps drew my attention. From the other side of the park Freddy sprinted toward us. “A couple saw a man putting a baby into a car seat. Got a description, and I’ve got four of our best guys on it. We’re gonna get her back to you, okay Kat?”

Freddy glanced at Lazarus, then slowly stepped forward and pulled me into a hug. His deep growl comforting. “I’m get her back, Kat. I want you to hear me, can you do that…can you hear me?”

There was nothing kind or soft about Freddy. Nothing tender. He was a savage and brutal, and right now that’s exactly what I needed. I gave a slow nod and lifted my gaze. There were no tears, no weeping. Just unfathomable rage. I looked at my husband, knowing exactlywhat…he…was…

“Get her back to me,” I snarled, my face throbbing and stinging. Never in my life had I ever felt this dangerous. “Get her back to me and never let this happen again.”
