“You were there because Monica invited you,” he answered.

I spun, fixing on his stupid gaze. “I was there because they wanted to celebrate me being pregnant!”

His brow furrowed as he stared at me, stunned. There was a tiny shake of his head, as though he didn’t want to hear those words.

“Oh, did Monica conveniently leave that fact out?” I took a step toward him as acracksounded above. “She honestly didn’t tell you, did she?”

“Tell me?”

The crack was followed with aboom!I knew the sound of gunshots when I heard it…and I also knew the sound of my husband’s wrath. “Yes father, I’m pregnant with Lazarus’ baby.”

Boom!

The roar came from overhead. I took a step backward, distancing myself between whoever came through that door and the target for their rage. “You have no idea, do you,” I answered, glancing at the man who manipulated and controlled and when he didn’t get his own way—he forced. “You have no idea of the man I married. But you will…you will now.”

Boom! The door in front of me shuddered. I pressed my hand against Sophie, shielding her as best I could as the door flew open, and chaos descended in a flurry of gunshots and roars.

“Get the fuck away from her!” Lazarus charged through the door; the gun raised in his hand. His gaze moved to me, and then to Sophie in my arms and that rage glinted in his ice-blue eyes.

“You,” my father snapped, and motioned his guard forward. The mercenary lifted his gun, taking aim at my husband as Freddie and Logan thundered down the stairs two steps behind.

That was all it took. Freddie lifted his gun, taking aim, and pulled the trigger.Crack.The guard never had chance. His head snapped backward, and blood sprayed out.

I shielded her eyes, stumbling backwards until someone grabbed me from behind.

“Drop the gun,” my father snapped. Cold steel pressed against my side. I stiffened and looked down to the gun pressed at my waist.

Freddie was savage, charging across the basement living room until Lazarus’ eyes widened and he roared. “No!”

The gun stabbed, grinding against my ribs. I pulled away, turning to shield my daughter. If he pulled the tigger then I’d fall. I could hurt her…I could crush her.

“Stop.” I shoved him away by my elbow, then turned, shoving Sophie toward Logan. “Take her…take her now!”

But the moment I lunged, driving her to safety, my father pounced. He grabbed her, yanking her against him so hard her little arm buckled, and she unleashed a blood-curdling scream.

I reacted instantly, not thinking about myself and lashed out, clawing his face.Crack!I sucked in a hard breath. The room was frozen in time, until my father roared. I lunged as Sophie fell. But Logan was there, driving forward faster than his big frame should move as my father shoved me toward the ground.

I hit the polished concrete floor and bounced. Agony ripped along my spine, unleashing a piercing cry.

Boom!

The gunshot rang out.

I looked up to see Laz with the muzzle aimed at my father. I sucked in a hard breath, watching the man who manipulated me my entire life stumble backward, and then fall. He hit the floor above me. Lazarus dropped to the ground next to me, pulling me into his arms.

“You’re okay, Kat,” he growled, holding me close. “You’re okay.”

I moaned with the pain, clutching my back, but still I tilted my head, finding the blood pooling under my father’s head and shuddering.

“Easy,” Lazarus murmured, sliding his hands carefully underneath me and lifting. Logan’s soothing rumble echoed out as he held my daughter against his broad chest. His big hands still held a gun with one hand and my daughter in the other.

He looked dangerous…and loving all at once, lifting his head to Laz as my husband carried me in his arms. One look at my father’s body and Logan muttered, “Let’s get the fuck out of here.”

Each step was agony. I gripped Laz’s arms and cried out with the pain, replaying over and over in my head the second Sophie hurtled toward that shimmering hard ground. She would’ve fallen on her head. She could’ve broken her neck or died. The image of that filled me…followed by the pooling blood.
