Perfect, perky breasts pressed against me as she murmured. “Want me to take your mind off whatever’s bothering you?”

She rolled her hips, grinding against me. I waited for a reaction, waited for that aching need to thicken my cock. I waited for the memory of her throat working to consume me. But it didn’t. I just lifted my head and stared into her eyes, and realized what had been eating at me…I was fucking bored.

Bored of this room.

Bored of this waiting.

I was bored of Bethany.

But Finley. Finley Salvatore and his poor little hurt feelings. Now that sparked a hunger inside me. I wanted to see the look on his face when I turned up on his precious little island. But it was more than that…

I wanted to know the reason he'd changed his damn mind about going.

And I wanted to ruin his fucking plans.

Screams cut through the air.

Guttural.

Savage.

“I’ll fucking kill them!” Marco Baldeon roared.

His eyes were wide, the whites gleaming neon bright in the lights of the luxury cruiser. I tried not to look at his bloodied white shirt, or the bullet holes peppered along the wall. Glass crunched under my feet as I stumbled and caught my balance as the boat turned.

Salty spray hit me. I licked my lips. It was the taste of the salt I sought out with the swipe of my lips. The salt that told me I was alive, that I could taste as I breathed. That I was okay, even as the panicked thunder of my heart sprouted wings and fluttered like a bird trapped in my chest.

I'd felt nothing when the first cracks of the gunshots rang out…and that frightened me. I was cold, frozen, just standing there as glass shattered at my left and a shower of shards hit the cruiser’s floor.

Screams followed soon after, bellows of commands before the Commission’s security opened fire in return, spraying the choppy waves of the sea with bullets. I stood there, watching as Baldeon drew his own firearm and opened fire.

Any other time, this would’ve been horrific.

Any other time, it’d make the news.

But not when I was surrounded by the sons and daughters of the most dangerous families in the country.

Not when I was headed for an island institute that catered tothe Mafia.

Bloodshed was a way of life for these people.

What was a little assassination attempt on the way there, if not part of the fucking atmosphere?

The boat lurched to the side and took my stomach with it. Chatter invaded my steely focus on trying not to heave. I swallowed, and swallowed again, then lifted my gaze to something in the distance, anything that’d help the queasiness. Champagne flowed and crystal clinked on a damn luxury cruiser. I smiled as the conversation gravitated my way, but inside I was panicking…

I glanced carefully around the boat, catching the brunette standing in the shadows, trying to look casual. But she was anything but. In dark blue jeans and a floral top, she looked…normal.

That had to be her…Annalise Eden. She lifted her gaze and connected with mine. I gave her a careful smile.Easy,I whispered in my head.Don’t spook her.

I’d hired a private investigator without my father knowing, to give me a full brief on every person attending the island. But there was only one they couldn’t find any info on, only one whose past led to a dead end and triggered a series of red flags for my PI. Whoever Annalise Eden was, she didn’t want anyone probing into her private life…and if they so much as tried to, you could damn well know she’d be informed.

I shifted nervously as the boat rose on the waves. She glanced my way once more. I made sure not to look her way that time. Instead, the mask I wore in public slipped down as I smiled and made small talk with some of the others, women I already knew…and couldn’t trust.

But Annalise Eden. Maybe she was someone I could depend on? Maybe she was someone who was dangerous enough to help me?I hoped so. I really did…because I was getting desperate.
