“Jake Green.” I mulled the name over. “Green banks, right?”

He pushed ahead, striding toward the row of seats next to me. His teeth showed when he smiled, and he had nice teeth. “Yeah, that’s me. I heard your dad made some waves to get you here.”

“Sure he did,” I answered.

It wasn’t my father at all. If he'd had anything to do with this, I would’ve never even known about this place. But I did. Desperation had driven me to my laptop moments after I'd turned away from the sink in our kitchen and left the sharp blade of the knife behind. It was desperation that had driven me to do something I’d never done before.

That was to fight.

“So, you all settled in then?”

He slipped into the seat next to me. I glanced his way and smiled. “Sure. You?”

“Got a sweet view overlooking the ocean. I’m kinda pumped about the classes, and now that you’re here…”

I tuned out, slid my phone free, and scrolled through Facebook and TikTok, giving a nod and a smile when it was needed. The lecturer started, and for that I was thankful. At least Jake fell silent, his eyes fixed on the front of the classroom, leaving me to scan the rest of the class.

It was easy to see who was Mafia.

Scowling glares and looming bodyguards. I scanned every gaze, catching sight of Xael in the back row. She glanced my way and gave a nod. There was a blonde next to her, someone I’d never seen before. As I stared, she glanced my way and met my gaze. There was something dangerous in her gaze, something…not quite right.

But then she caught Xael’s seductive smile and the nod my way and gave me a smirk of her own. I wondered if she was Evan Valachi? The word was a few of the Commission’s kids were here. Baldeon I'd already seen screaming and bleeding. My mind drifted to him and I wondered if he was still at the infirmary?

I passed the class in a daydream, sliding out of my seat when the others started to move.

“Want to walk to your next class together?”

I scowled and glanced up. Oh, that’s right…Jake. “Sure.”

“Hey,Kat!”

I turned at the feminine growl and caught Xael striding toward me. “Party tonight.”

“Where?” I smiled, and shook my head.

Xael just gave a shrug and stopped in front of me. “I dunno, just follow the noise, I guess. This is Evan…Valachi.”

I gave the blonde a critical glance. “I thought it was. Nice to meet you.”

“X has told me all good things.” She met my stare with her own.

She was careful, composed, tall in wide-bottom black slacks and a cream top, plunging at her breasts. She had an unwavering stare and for a second, a spike of fear coursed through my veins. The Valachis were powerful people…so that was it…maybe…

“I guess I’ll see you tonight?” I murmured.

“Sure. Maybe. I’ll see if there’s no other trouble I can get into first.” Xael gave me a wink and sauntered off.

“Kat.” Evan nodded and followed her.

“Nice.” Jake slowed his giant steps to match with mine as I shuffled my way past the desks and down the stairs. “A party.”

The other students piled through the door, some going left to the stairs and another building.

“I think we’re just down here,” Jake said, pointing right.

I nodded and followed, letting him lead the way. He held open the door for me when we found the class, smiled and motioned me forward. He was nice…too nice, andI hated it. Women like me didn’t get guys like him. If they did, it never lasted, and I sure as hell didn’t want to see the spark in his eyes die when he realized how tainted I really was.

I sat down, catching sight of Anna striding through the door. “Ah, this seat’s taken,” I declared, and smiled at him.
