Just how I liked it.

Dark enough so that the cracks in my mask didn’t show.

And for the first time, I didn’t focus on the panic. I had something else to occupy my thoughts. Something dangerous…something that filled me withpurpose.

I strode in smiling and gave a wink to a familiar face inside the doorway.

“Hey, Jacob!”I leaned in and kissed him on the cheek. Anna watched me cautiously as she came closer, but I gave her a special smile. She was so fucking sweet, too goddamn sweet.A butterfly flapping her way into a hornets' nest.

“Kat,” she greeted warily from beside me.

“It’s fine,” I assured as I dragged her toward the kitchen.

“Isaac,” I called.

Isaac Kensington, one of the golf course kids.

“Kat, you showed.” His eyes widened in surprise.

He shouldn’t have been surprised, this was after all, the first party of our goddamn institute year. He handed me three fingers of Grey Goose…or maybe it was a little more, who the fuck was counting?

“And who’s this?” he asked, eying Anna.No one you’ll be getting close to, buddy.“Family…who is thirsty for champagne,” I hinted, searching every female face.

“Thanks,” Anna said, so damn polite.

“You two don’t look like family.”

Tall, leggy, dead-as-fuck eyes drew my gaze. “No, we don’t,” I answered, catching sight of my target.

They made small talk, but I wasn’t listening. I was watching the room, waiting for my chance, as the giant-ass bitch across the room unwound herself from Bernard Kissington and rose to her full height.

“Well, help yourself to anything you want,” Isaac urged, and left.

“Oh, we will,” I answered as the bitch rose and snapped a command to the two assholes guarding her no-tits-and-no-ass scrawny body before she made her way along the hall.

“You good for a minute?” I asked, not bothering to wait for an answer.

In my head, all I could see was the flare of pain on Anna’s face and the utter contempt on the bitch’s face as she'd shoved my friend aside.

“Hey, sexy!” Some guy called me.

I flashed him a smile, raked my gaze over the game of blackjack in the corner, and kept on walking, head held high, right past her bodyguards, who shifted from one foot to the other and straightened their jackets, painfully awkward like a pair of kicked balls.

But the scent was in the water…and smiles and laughter aside, I was a fucking shark.

I slowed at the cracked-open bathroom door. Black tiles and brushed stainless accessories were illuminated by the hard glare of overhead lights.

There were three stalls, two already empty. But the bitch hadn’t come to take a piss. Her head was down, black dress riding high at the back of her thighs as she snorted a line of cocaine. There was a set of hair clippers on the dresser. Perfect. I grabbed them as the toilet flushed and a guy strode out of a stall, took one look at me with the clippers in my hand, and scowled. But I wasn’t here for him.

“Kat,” he said carefully, and left…without washing his hands.

“You see,” I started, and took a careful step forward. “People know me, and I know people. Most I know by name…or the dollars in their bank account. But you…” I stared at her in the mirror as she brushed her thin fucking nostrils with her thumb. “You I know because you’re a fucking cunt…and you messed with the wrong person.”

The bitch didn’t even have the decency to look at me.

I lashed out, spearing manicured nails through her slicked-back ash-blonde hair and fisted what I could. Her eyes flew wide, finally registering who I was here for.

“Get the fuckoff me!”she cried, trying to stand.
