I need—

“Whoa there.” The asshole who looked like a piece-of-shit version of Shawn Mendes chuckled and lunged, barring the doorway.

I just lashed out, clawing and hitting, charging against him. “Get the fuck out of my way…get out of my way!”

He just grabbed me and spun, turning me around until he wound his long arms across me, holding me like a straitjacket against his chest. “Can’t let you do that, Katerina.”

Tears sprung to my eyes as he wrestled me. “Get out of my way.” The words were thick and strange.

I tried to lift my hand, tried to shove my finger down my throat, not caring if I vomited all over him or the floor. But he grabbed my wrist in a cruel grip and forced it to my side.

“What the fuck did you give me?” I whimpered as the room started to spin.

“Just a little something to help calm you down.”

“No…” I cried. “No…no…no.”

“I have to protect you, Katerina,” he whispered in my ear. “Because you’re far too precious to let go.”

The amber glow of the bedroom blurred. All I saw was that white mask on the end of the bed as the fight went out of me and my arms went slack.

“That’s the way,” he murmured. I didn’t even know whohewas.

“Damon,” he answered, as though I'd asked the question. Maybe I had? “Damon Zakharov.”

I tried to focus on my breathing as the room faded, then sharpened.

“You’re going to be a good girl, aren’t you, Katerina?”

Breathe.

Breathe.

Breathe…

“Because if you don’t, do you know what will happen? Hale will happen…and he’ll be angry.”

I clenched my insides. Fear was heavy in my belly.

“That’s the way.” He relaxed his grip, letting my hands flop to my sides. “That’s much better. You’re going to be my new girlfriend, aren’t you, Katerina?”

You remember Mr. Hale?

My father’s words resounded in my head, birthed from a lifetime of nightmares. “Yes,” I answered. “Whatever you need.”

He chuckled, this man…Damon…Hale. They were all the same. Taking…taking…taking.

“Now, you’ll come with me and enjoy the party…and you’ll do exactly as you’re told.”

I could only nod, only watch as he strode forward and picked up the white mask from the bed and slipped it back inside his jacket.

“Now,” he ordered.

My feet moved on their own, my body no longer mine to control. It was all his now. All Hale’s.

He opened the door and waited. I lowered my head and swayed as I walked.

“Easy,” he growled. ‘I don’t want them thinking I drugged you.”
