I’d do anything.

Just not drugged.

Not again.

“We sure are,” I answered. “And you’re going to look like a knockout.”

“No,” she disagreed, and shook her head. “No more heels, not tonight. This time I’m going in jeans.”

“Jesus, Anna.” I groaned. “At least add a designer blouse or something.”

She just laughed as we strode into the foyer. I ran for the bathroom as soon as I stepped off the elevator. But it wasn’t just my bladder that was clenched tight. I used the toilet, then gripped the basin, lifting my gaze to the stranger in the mirror.

The one who'd been desperate enough to come to this place for protection.

And walked straight into the Devil’s lair.

“You can do this,” I whispered to my reflection. “It’s not like you haven’t spent your entire life with those men.”

But the woman staring back at me wasn’t so sure. Once she could have survived.

But everything’s changed now.

My world.

My purpose.

My fear.

I pushed backwards and went into my bedroom, picking out the clothes I’d wear tonight before heading into the shower.

“You look stunning, Kat,” Anna said when I reappeared, her eyes widening as she leaned against the kitchen counter.

“All part of the lie, isn’t it?” I smiled, taking the sting out of the words.

More like taking the truth out of them.

But Anna stilled, and swallowed. “I don’t know what you mean.”

“Of course you don’t.” I stepped closer and grabbed the glass of champagne from beside her, taking a sip before putting it back down.

“Are you ready for this?” she asked.

No, not really.

“Sure," I answered, and glanced at the night sky through the window.

All day I’d felt this dread.

Thisweightpressing down on me.

One I was unable to get out from under.

That weight grew heavier as Anna pushed off the counter.

So heavy, my shoulders sagged.

But I forced myself forward, catching up to her at the elevators.
