Waiting for partying, happy Kat to appear.
“You’ve got that look again.”
I forced my smile wider. “Just family stuff.”
She left it at that, not probing any harder, not digging any deeper.
One scratch of this glittering surface and the ruin would appear.
I stepped onto the elevator and followed her all the way out into the night. The faint sound of music grew louder as we neared. I breathed the salty air deep as my steps grew slower. Damon’s building was a beacon in the distance, the lights strobing, the music thumping.
But as we came closer, I caught movement from the corner of my eye.
Lazarus Rossi leaned against Damon’s building, drawing deep on a cigarette before flicking it end over end toward the grass.
“You go on ahead,” I murmured to Anna. “I’ll be up there soon.”
She jerked a panicked gaze from Lazarus to me and scowled. “You sure you want to do this?”
“I’m sure,” I answered, and waited.
Lazarus just watched me with those tempestuous blue eyes.
“Okay then.” She took a step before stopping. “If you’re not up in ten minutes, I’m going to come looking.”
Then she left, striding toward the doorway and a small group of people who headed toward her from the opposite side. He waited until we were alone before moving, pushing his body from the wall and turning toward me.
The moment he did that, the thrumming in my veins grew stronger.
Tell him.
Tell him the truth.
“I seem to have a problem where you’re concerned, redhead.” Lazarus stepped closer, hard muscles rolling with his graceful stride. He lifted his hand and combed back sandy blonde hair from his face. “The kind of problem that’s keeping me up at night.”
He was threatening as he walked.
All malice and murder.
All vicious and violent.
Tell him!
That roaring in my head wouldn’t stop.
I was rooted to the spot as he strode closer, so close I caught the blue and black in his eyes.
So close he could touch me.
So close he could hear.
He wanted me…that much I knew.
But would he want me if he knew the truth?
Would he want me…if I was pregnant?
