“Freddy,” I barked. “Something’s wrong.”

He was alert in an instant. “Where?”

“I’m running toward the rear of the compound, toward the hangar. I think it’s building six…yeah. Baldeon’s…I think it’s—”

“Donotfucking move without me, Laz. You hear me?” Freddy barked. “Do not fucking move.”

The call was disconnected in an instant. I shoved the phone into my pocket and drove my body forward. With each thudding step, a surety found me. Baldeon’s apartment…Baldeon. If the fucker was faking it, if the fucker was screaming because of a goddamn broken nail, I’d kill him myself.

But even as the thought filled my head I knew that was a lie.

You didn’t scream like that because of a nail.

You screamed like that when you were fighting to survive.

A blur of black in the shadows moved fast, shooting from behind the building and racing toward the water. Another followed not three steps behind.Something’s wrong…something’s wrong…SOMETHING IS WRONG!

I jerked my gaze from the water as the faint sound of an engine slipped through the air as I charged toward the building. Silence surrounded me, cold, empty silence as I lunged from the grass to the hard, pebbled pavement and slammed against the door of Baldeon’s building. There was a guard on the ground…dead.A gunshot to the head, eyes wide open, his face in a pool of blood.

I turned back to the sensor and fumbled for the card in my pocket, praying it got me inside. I slammed the card against the sensor, the voice in my head screaming.WORK…WORK…WORK, YOU PIECE OF SHIT!

The light went from red to green and the door opened.

My phone vibrated in my pocket.

But I didn’t answer, I was too busy lunging into the foyer as the doors opened.

“Lazarus!”

I jerked my head up at the blur running toward me, head down, arms pistoning, his mouth contorted in desperation and rage. I glanced toward the bodyguard lying on the floor, then at Freddy. Logan was further behind him...just a dark blur in the night.

Just like the ones I saw before.

“You go in there…” Freddy panted, sucking in harsh breaths, “and I’ll kick your fucking ass.”

I turned as he charged through thedoorI held and slowed. His gun was already in his hand, muzzle lifted as he scanned the foyer, his gaze stopping at the body. “Fuck me.”

I stepped into the blood and knelt beside the poor sonofabitch.

“Laz…he’s…” Freddy started, then stopped.

But it wasn’t a pulse I searched for as I shoved his jacket aside and jerked the master key from his belt. “I heard screams, then someone running…two someones.”

Freddy jerked his gaze toward me as I lunged for the elevator and slammed the card against the sensor.Boom!I flinched as Logan pounded the door. The elevator opened as Freddy punched the button opening the outer door. My bodyguards surrounded me as I charged into the elevator.

Their guns were raised, and there was nothing but steely stares and the sound of hard, heavy breaths. Freddy handed me his second piece as the elevator doors opened to the top floor apartment. But he was moving before I did, pushing me aside to step into the line of fire.

Silence.

Chilling, awful, fucking silence waited for us.

We moved fast, sweeping through every room in the apartment before Freddy turned. “There’s nothing here.”

“No.” I shook my head. “There has to be. I know that fucking sound. I know…that fucking scream.”

Desperation roared inside my head as I tried to think. I knew thatterror. The dead guard in the foyer wasn’t for nothing.

Logan’s phone rang. He answered it instantly. “Yeah, building five. Okay, there’s one of your men dead in the foyer.”
