My gut clenched as I nodded and turned to leave. I had to get out of there. I had to get…away.

“Freddy,” I whispered, the sound like a plea.

“I got you.” He was right there beside me, striding forward toward the Commission’s guards. “Move,” he growled, and they didn’t argue, stepping aside for me to stride past and into the harsh lights of the elevator.

Footsteps thundered toward us as we strode out of Baldeon’s building, leaving the horror behind. Finley Salvatore ran toward us, his eyes wide, meeting mine. “Baldeon?” he growled.

I didn’t have the answer. I couldn't speak.

I did the only thing I knew to do.

I left him and that night behind, making my way toward the building where she stayed, my beautiful redhead with the empty eyes. Freddy stood behind me as I stood in the shadows and lifted my gaze to the bright lights of the penthouse suite. “I need you to look into someone for me,” I murmured.

“Laz, no. She’s not your—” Freddy started, then stopped. “You’re not going to leave that alone, are you?”

“No,” I answered, staring into the shimmering lights. “No, I’m not. I want to know everything there is to know about a Hale.”

“She’s trouble,” Freddy urged, sounding desperate. “Trouble we don’t need.”

But I needed her.

I needed her face in my mind.

The scent of her body on my skin.

I needed her to wash away the horror of what I'd seen tonight. Now…and forever.

Yeah, I liked the sound of that.

I dressed after Lazarus walked out, having seen and heard the disgusting things I'd done…things Damon wanted me to do again.Revulsion fueled me as I yanked on my underwear and slipped the dress over my head.

“Stay the fuck away from me, Damon,” I warned, and tugged on my heels. “Just stay away from my friends and stay away from me.”

He lifted his head from the bed and watched me in his drunken stupor. “You know that’s never going to happen. Besides, I thought I made quite the impact with your little roommate today. I heard she’s a virgin…and you know how much we like those.”

We…

My pulse sped at the thought. Screams filled my head. Sickening, terrified screams. Still, I fought the panic and tugged my zipper into place, meeting his gaze. “D-don’t make me hurt you.”

He just smiled.

I left then, hurrying through the apartment in search of Anna, and found her sitting alone on the same damn sofa as when I'd left. “You ready to leave?” I murmured.

Relief swept across her face as she rose. “I thought you’d never ask.”

We started toward the elevator, then the first message came through.

“Oh my God,”came a female cried from somewhere deeper in the apartment.

“No fucking way,” a guy barked.

I glanced over my shoulder as he scanned the room. “Baldeon’s dead. Someone got to him.”

Everyone at the party froze. A party that was meant for him, a celebration of surviving a gunshot to the shoulder. I swallowed hard as Anna whispered, “Finley…”
