The flames inside me seemed to splutter as I scowled. “You did?”

She licked her lips, shifting her weight from one foot to the other. “Yeah,” she answered. “Look, I feel really bad with what happened between us.”

“You mean with what happened between you and Anna, right?” I corrected.

“Yeah, that,” she nodded. “I don’t know what came over me. That’s not how I normally am.”

I doubted that…I doubted that very much.

“So I wanted to find you to let you know that.” She forced a smile, fumbling with her words.

I searched her gaze, hating how that anger I had for her seemed to weaken.

“Look, I’m trying here.” She winced and met my gaze. “The last thing I want is to be on a damn island with someone who doesn’t like me, and I didn’t know who you were.”

“And now you do,” I responded.

She licked her lips. “Now I do.”

But I was talking about the fact that I’d have my friend’s back, and she was talking about something else entirely. I saw it in the way she was acting differently around me and the sudden clarity around my name.

I took a step away, nodding.

“Can I walk with you?” she asked nervously, looking over her shoulder. “My guard has suddenly disappeared and I’m a little…scared. You know, with themurder.”

She was scared? As much as I wanted to leave her behind, I didn’t want to bethatperson. I wanted to be someone good, someone hard and tough. Someone who was…good.Lazarus’s face filled my mind as I gave a sigh and muttered. “Sure, I was leaving anyway.”

“Oh, thank God,” she gushed, and fell into step, glancing once more over her shoulder as though Baldeon’s killer was just one damn step away.

I just kept walking, heading down the hallway and past the darkened classrooms until we got toward the foyer.

“I hate to be a pain, seeing as you’re being so fucking nice, but I’m looking for this damn teacher. He said he was in two-oh-one. I think that’s just over there. Will you come with me?” She pointed to the hallway across the foyer. “It’ll take like two seconds, I promise.”

I glanced toward the doors and the growing gloom that was waiting for me outside. Palms swayed and bent with the brutal gusts of wind. “Sure,” I muttered, and dragged my gaze from the sight. “Why the hell not.”

“Thank you.” She breathed a sigh of relief and took half a step ahead. “It’s just up here. I promise, I’ll be like a second.”

I followed her, cutting across the foyer, and listened to the wind howling. It was going to storm, and I was betting Anna would stay with Finley, leaving me all alone.

“Just in here.”

I nodded, not really listening, as she stepped inside a darkened classroom. My mind was drawn back to Lazarus and the kiss from last night. The kiss that had felt too good to be real—

“Fuck!”she howled.

I jerked my gaze up at the sound from the room.

“I’ve twisted my damn ankle!” the idiot called from inside.

I pushed the door open and entered, my hand fumbling for the light switch as I grumbled, “Wait a second…I’m coming.”

The door closed with abangbehind me. I jumped at the sound as the flick of a lighter came further into the room, and Damon’s face brightened in the glow.

“You really need to make better choices, Katerina.” He pushed off from the wall. “You need to make better friends.”
