It was the same thick, biting accent the Commander had.Albanian.“Training exercise, huh?” I sneered, scanning every face before I jerked my head toward the elevator. “Then you won’t mind letting me up to see Kilpatrick?”

“Alexi isn’t here,” the asshole in charge answered without shifting that steely gaze from mine.

Alexi, huh?Something was going on here, something I wasn’t privy to. I knew there was a reason why Alexi would come back here after years of staying away. Why, all of a sudden on the eve of him taking over the family seat on the Commission, he’d just show up and make trouble.

Considering what had happened to his brother.

I suppose eating his own gun and surviving would shatter anyone, but Wraith Kilpatrick wasn’t just shattered…the man was beyond saving. Word was he was still in that psych ward. Word was no one went near him…including his sweet little brother who now took his place as the head of his family.

And as I stared at this stony-faced asshole, I knew I was getting nowhere.

They wouldn’t let me up there.

They wouldn’t even tell me the damn truth.

I just nodded. “Sure, maybe I’ll just come back.”

“Yeah, maybe you should,” the asshole murmured, and adjusted his jacket.

But he glanced toward Logan, waiting for him to make a move.

The only problem was…if Logan decided to act, you’d never see him coming. The best you could hope for was to wake up after the fact. My protector said nothing as I turned. He didn't move, didn't shift that brutal fucking stare from the asshole’s gaze. I had to smother a smirk. The idiot just made a target of himself.

We left them behind, and I didn’t have to lead the way for Logan to end up at Kat’s building. We stepped inside and shook the roar from our ears.

“They upstairs?” Logan growled at the guard.

He glanced from Logan to me and slowly nodded.

“Well then, call them, for fuck's sake,” Logan snapped. “I’m not going to storm into a woman’s apartment unannounced.”

The poor idiot just fumbled with his phone, then mumbled, “Miss VanHalen. I’ve got some…menhere to see you.”

“Lazarus Rossi and Logan James,” my protector snapped.

I’d never seen him like this before. Never so…carefularound a woman. Maybe I wasn’t the only one holding a damn flame for Kat VanHalen? The idea of that made me feel…possessive and dangerous.

“Yes, ma’am,” the guard answered, and ended the call.

He stole toward the elevator and swiped his card across the sensor. “Miss VanHalen said to go on up.”

Logan stared daggers into the poor bastard. Pissed off and super wary. No one better cross Logan today…including me.

I stepped inside and rose with the seething bastard until the door opened and she was there, her red hair piled into a mess on top of her head.Jesus.She looked…

Logan swallowed hard and glanced away.

Yeah, he was interested. I knew just how he felt.

“Everything okay?” Kat asked carefully, and wrapped her arms around her waist.

Logan just took a step toward the window. She followed the movement for a second before turning to me.

“Fine,” I answered, and took a step toward her. “Would you believe we were in the neighborhood?”

She smiled at that, those delicious lips curling higher at one corner. I swallowed hard, remembering how those lips had felt on mine. How, unrestrained, she was fucking ferocious. Her cheeks blushed when she met my gaze, then dropped her focus to my lips. She was remembering that heat between us, too…

Her blush deepened as she answered. “Yeah, I guess I could believe that.”
