“Are you safe?” Logan cut in.

She glanced over her shoulder at him and smiled. “Yes, thank you.”

There was a nod of his head before he turned to the window once more. “Good.

He said it like he contemplated keeping her safe himself. I ground my teeth as that savage part of me rose to the challenge.

“Logan said you came by yesterday.” I drew her focus to me.

Her blush seemed to fade in an instant, leaving a washed-out look behind. There was a flicker of fear in her eyes, a catch of her breath that anyone else might’ve missed. But I missednothingwhen it came to her, not the stillness of her chest, not the way those perfect eyes seemed to flicker, tearing from my face as though she was afraid if I looked too hard I might just find something I didn’t like in her.

“Sorry I wasn’t there.” I kept prodding. “But I’m here now…if you needed anything.”

Please…please, say you need something, that desperation rose inside me. My protection. My fucking wrath. Anything. Just ask for anything…

But she just glanced at Logan. “I’m good now, thank you.”

I glanced around the apartment, hating that I hadn’t been there yesterday. “You all alone?”

“Yes,” she said in a careful voice.

I flinched, my heart pounding. “I meant, your roommate's already in class? Not in a creepy way.”

She just took a step closer and lowered her voice. “There’s nothing about you that’s creepy, Lazarus. She went to an early class.”

“One of those people, huh? Early to class, a straight A student,” I said, catching her smile.

“Something like that.” She shifted her weight from one foot to the other.

Logan just stared out the damn window as the silence grew between us. “Well, if you need anything, you know where we are.” I tried for strength and sounded like a damn sap.

“I’ll see you later?” she asked.

“Yeah.” I gave her a smile as hope flared. “I’ll see you later.”

WELL…YOU KNOW WHERE WE ARE.

Could I sound any more pitiful? Logan glanced my way as we strode into the elevator. “Don’t say a fucking word,” I snarled.

I tried not to see the shit-eating grin on the asshole’s face, and turned away. Even the brutal wind couldn’t stop the replay of my own pathetic words.

“Come on,” Logan muttered. “Grab your gear and let's head to the gym, work off some of that pent-up sexual energy, huh?”

He threw a punch I saw coming a mile away. I dodged it, swatting his meaty fist away. Still, it stung as it landed in my palm. I just gave a nod, knowing that was exactly what I needed. I needed to work out how that woman affected me so damn much. I needed to work out how to handle it if she didn’t feel the damn same.

We went upstairs, Logan hovering at the elevator while I grabbed my gear, then followed back to his apartment. I waited while he grabbed his gloves and a change of clothes, then we went down to the fully equipped gym and the added sparring mat.

Two minutes later, I was dressed in shorts and a t-shirt, and starting to work the coiled tension from my body with short, hard jabs into the air in front of me.

“Come on, you can do better than that,” Logan jabbed, his dark eyes alight with hunger.

Freddy just grinned, watching from the sidelines since one of us had to be armed to the teeth. Logan just flanked my side, gloved hands up, protecting his face. He moved like a predator, head tucked in, muscles flexing as he lashed out with a blow toward my face.

I dodged it, barely. Moving to the side.Always to the side. His commands rang in my head.Get on the outside of them, never in the middle. Do as much damage as you can.I clenched and drove a fist out, catching him in the kidneys. He flinched and swung, his blow landing in the center of my chest.
