His gaze moved to me in an instant, then to my fingers touching Lazarus’s face, before he swallowed hard. There was a wince at the sight, before he shifted to Lazarus. “The doc—”

“Isn’t needed…apparently,” Laz muttered, still staring into my eyes.

I broke his gaze, lowered my hand, and turned toward them. “There isn’t anything to test,” I slurred, and scowled, trying to shake off the last of the drug. “I’m fine, honestly.”

Logan froze at the words, his brow furrowing, before his fists clenched at his sides. “You’re notfine,Kat.” He jerked his gaze to mine.

“How about a shot to counter the effects of the drug you ingested?” The doctor came closer, his kind eyes seeming to bore right through me.

I glanced at Lazarus, finding his brow furrowed with concern, then gave a slow nod. “Okay.”

The doctor set to work, opening a backpack and pulling out a small kit. I didn’t watch him, just held Lazarus’s gaze. When the doc came close, Lazarus reached for my hand.

“Eyes on me, princess,” my protector said forcefully.

The sting was instant in my arm, but then it was over.

“Just a check of your vitals,” the doc added. He didn’t even wait this time, just gently grasped my shoulder and lowered me to sit on the bed, then wrapped a cuff around my arm and pumped it tight. I barely noticed the icy touch of the stethoscope as the effects of whatever he'd given me took hold.

My thoughts became clearer, and with it, the memory of what had happened. I closed my eyes, swallowing a shudder.

“What’s wrong?” Lazarus gripped my hand tighter.

I just shook my head. “Nothing. It’s all okay.”

Then the doc was done, tearing the cuff free. “Mr. Rossi, re-thinking that sedative?”

“No need, doc,” Lazarus answered, drawing my gaze. "Rage is all the drug I need.”

There was a mutter, before he and Logan left, leaving us alone once more. Goosebumps raced along my arms with a shiver. I wrapped my arms around my middle as Lazarus just stared. “He likes you.”

“The doctor?” I muttered. “Hardly.”

“You know who I mean.” I glanced his way, but there wasn’t jealousy or anger staring back at me, there was pride. “Iwanthim to like you,” Lazarus murmured, and stepped closer. “That way, I’ll always know you’re safe. You’ll never have a more dangerous and loyal man at your back than Logan.”

“Yes, I will,” I disagreed, turning to him. “You.”

I stood and crossed the small space between us. “You asked me if I was cold, and yes, I’m cold. I’m cold and my head is weird. I’m all those things when I’m around you, Lazarus. So much so, that I don’t quite know how to act.”

“Do you want to go back to him?”

I stiffened with the chilling tone in his words. “Who?”

“Zakharov,” he answered carefully. “Do you…want to go back to him?”

Fear gripped me. “Never.”

A nod of his head and he exhaled hard with relief. “Good, okay. Good. I just had to make sure.” He met my gaze. “I’ve met women who kept going back, even after their boyfriends, you know, hurt them.I needed to make sure that wasn’t you.”

Tell him…

That voice whispered.

Tell him who you really are.

That fluttering deep in my belly pushed me one step closer, but still the words wouldn’t come. “You want to know who I am?”

He held my gaze. “Yeah, I do.”
