I knew she wanted an explanation but I just couldn’t give it. Instead, I captured the perfect point of her chin and kissed her lower lip. “Shower, take your time, rifle through my damn things for all I care. I’m an open book where you’re concerned. Just don’t…” a tremor tore through me. “Just don’t leave. I’ll have Freddy at the door in case you need anything.”

“You’re going after her, aren’t you? You’re going after Anna.”

“Is that what you’re worried about? That I’m going to hurt her?” I asked.

The truth raged in her eyes. I had a reputation, even amongst my own kind. The Rossis had come from street thugs. We were the brutal and merciless underdogs, always fighting to retain our seat on the Commission…but there were certain things we didn’t do, and hunting down the best friend of the woman I care for was one of those things. “That’s not who I am,” I answered. “But don’t worry, you’ll figure that out the more time we’re together.”

“That confident, huh?” she said carefully.

“Yeah, when it comes to you, I am.”

I dropped my hand and stepped away, hating leaving her. But if I didn’t, then I’d take her to bed…and make her stay there. As much as that thought appealed to me…seeing Damon Zakharov appealed to me more. “I’ll call Freddy,” I murmured. “He’ll keep you safe until I get back.”

She said nothing as I grabbed my phone and punched out a message. There was one thing the Rossis weren’t…and that was fucking weak when it came to defending those we cared for. Once you were family…we’d take a fucking bullet for you, or in Kat’s case, deliver a message, one I wanted to be loud and goddamn clear.

I stepped into the elevator as I hit send, so by the time I reached their apartment, Freddy was waiting for me with his arms crossed over his chest and a look of concern. I strode out and into their apartment, looking for Logan.

“You sure you want to do this?” Freddy asked without moving.

I just glared at him over my shoulder. “Am I sure?”

“Hey.” He raised his hands in surrender. “I’m just asking here, making sure you’re prepared to go to war for this woman.”

“What he means is, once you declare your intentions, there’s no going back,” Logan added, striding from the bedroom as he snapped on his shoulder holster.

“I’m pretty sure I made my intentions clear when I broke his damn cheek, but look, if it takes knifing the bastard in the throat to make it a little clearer, then that’s what I’ll do.”

Both of them just stared at me, until Logan smothered a twitch of a smirk and looked away. “Okay then,” the brother added. “Let’s go make some enemies.”

“I’ll be back as soon as I can.” I glanced toward Freddy. “Keep her safe, whatever it takes.”

He just gave a nod and watched us step into the elevator.

Logan said nothing as we dropped to the foyer and strode out. The island’s guard stood near the door, watching the darkness through the window.

“All quiet?” Logan asked, drawing his gaze.

“Yes, sir,” the guard answered, his gaze moving from the guns strapped to Logan’s chest to me.

Only then did he flinch.

I must look threatening.

Good.

I strode out with Logan at my side. “Finley Salvatore thinks Anna is running.”

“If that’s the case, then she better run hard and fast. Dominic Salvatore is no man to mess with…and Finley has all the makings of a ruthless bastard to have as an enemy.”

I glanced his way as my hair lashed my face. “Is that a warning?”

He just glanced my way. “Call it a recommendation.”

A recommendation to be allies with Finley Salvatore. Now that, I hadn’t seen coming. But Logan wasn’t one to push a point, so he just walked the rest of the way in silence. I shoved his words away as we cut across the Institute’s grounds, until the faintcrackof gunfire carried on the wind.

Logan stopped walking, shifting his gaze to scan the dark. “Get to the infirmary, Laz,” he instructed without looking my way.

Urgency filled me. It was far too late to turn around, even if I wanted to…and I didn’t want to.
