This night was filled with danger, and I felt dangerous in it.

Hollow with hate.

With my bruised fists clenched at my sides.

I shifted my gaze to the main building in the distance and gritted my teeth. I was coming for Zakharov…ready or not.

Lazarus

The sound of gunfire grew louder as we stepped up to the main building. Movement came from inside, a blur of men dressed to kill. Logan palmed his gun and drew it from the holster. But the movement didn’t head our way. No, they disappeared toward the rear of the building and were gone in a heartbeat.

I waited, fists clenched, pissed that I hadn’t brought my own gun.But I knew why I hadn’t.

No gun…then no temptation to use it,right?

But fuck, I wanted to use it.

“Clear,” Logan muttered, and stepped up to the scanner.

We didn’t give a shit who saw us go in…I just didn’t want to be stopped before I was done, and when it came to protecting Kat, I was neverdone. The electric doors opened and we strode inside, making our way along the familiar halls.

It was only days ago that my father was here, meeting with the Commission in the wake of Baldeon’s death. I jerked my gaze toward the walls of the building and thought of the gunshots…Finley…and Anna. Was it happening again? Were they coming for another of the Commission’s sons?

My pulse sped at the thought. Maybe it was a good idea I was away from Kat…for the moment at least. “Message Freddy and make sure he’s on high alert. No one gets into that apartment, not unless it’s you, me, or the fucking Commander himself.”

“Sure.” Logan strode out, grabbing his phone with one hand, the other still holding his Sig Sauer, relaxed at his side.

Glass and steel blurred around me. Even the roar of the wind still battering the windows faded as I focused on the darkened hallways up ahead. All I cared about was her, that redheaded woman who’d somehow nicked my skin and crawled inside, working her way toward my heart.

The marks Damon had left behind on her body really got to me.

I’d seen bruises on women before.

Seen worse, too.

But not on someone I felt like this about.

Not someone I’d kill for.

And I will kill for her if I need to.

The faint light of Logan’s phone disappeared as I strode forward, leaving him to fall behind. The brother knew instantly where he was needed…and this was all me. I shoved through the closed double doors of the infirmary and lifted my gaze to the row of rooms up ahead. The bright lights of the nurses' station cast a glow across the floor, almost reaching the rooms on the opposite side.

But only one of them had a closed door, and that was where I headed. One glance over my shoulder, and I slowed, watched for movement, and eased the handle down before slipping inside.

Harsh wheezes filled the room. A broken nose for sure, maybe even a shattered eye socket. A few months of healing and he’d be good as new, ready to drug and rape the next woman. The beast inside me writhed with the thought. The image of him standing over her was burned into my mind.

I wanted this one burned into his.

I stepped around the curtain and neared the bed. The faint glow of moonlight cut through the massive windows, illuminating the swollen face of Damon Zakharov, asleep in the bed.

“Seeing you standing over her like that,” I murmured, listening to the change in his breathing as his eyes opened. “I wanted to kill you.”

He flinched as he came fully awake. One panicked gaze behind me to the closed door of his room, and he swallowedhard.

“Don’t worry,” I said, my voice strangely calm. “No one knows I’m here. You see, they’re all busy protecting those on the island. Just another one of the perks of living by a code, a code that stands between me, and the chance of you making it through this night alive.”
