Dagan
Aknock comes to mydoor when I’m putting some paperwork aside. “Come in.” I call out and Bolton enters.
“What is it?”
“It’s a few of the skunk shifters, causing a fuss out in the courtyard. They keep shifting and spraying the duds, I mean humans.” He quickly catches himself and I have to stop myself from laughing at that.
“Tell them to knock it off or they can go in the dungeons. Anything else.”
“Are you sure all this is wise, I mean, we get along with humans enough, but this celebration for them is over the top.”
“Do you have a problem with humans Bolton?” narrowing my eyes at him I try to assess him. He’s seemed to have an issue since I brought it up.
“I do and I don’t. It’s hard to explain, ever since the coming out they are getting bolder in their quest for knowledge of us. You know in the village over a group of humans tried to kidnap a jaguar shifter.”
My eyebrows squint together, I don’t remember hearing about that. “You didn’t tell me about that.”
“Of course not, I couldn’t even get a hold of you for the last month, you trusted me with the people while you were gone, and I dealt with it. Had to get the human shifter police force involved so no unnecessary deaths occurred.”
“Well?”
“They wanted to be turned, thought with all the books and movies out there about us it would be simple. You’d think after all this time they’d understand they can’t be changed, but they still try.”
I wave him off, “A few humans are like that, for the most part they keep to themselves, we have nothing to worry about.” I get up from my desk and walk around the room, making sure everything is in its place. “Everyone took my news better than I expected, I’ll be leaving in the morning to get back to my Queen. Make sure that anyone that wishes to move has the proper funds to do so.”
“Yes, My King.” Bolton will be staying behind to take care of the village while I’m gone, even though this move will be permanent, I’ll have to come back at times to check in with everyone, make sure it’s going smoothly.
He’s been giving me a weird vibe since I’ve been back, something isn’t right with him. When he leaves my office, I pick up my phone and call a few of my shifters in for a meeting.
They arrive promptly without question thirty minutes later.
“My King, what is it you’d like from us?”
“Bolton, he’s been off since I arrived back, do you two know anything?” Sasha, a wolf shifter and Casen, a bear shifter stare at me a while before fidgeting in their seats.
“Well, we didn’t want to say anything, but he’s been weird lately.”
“Weird how?”
“Taking secret meetings without informing the packs, going off without informing the packs, extra rude and mean to the duds, I mean humans, in the villages. Last week he shoved one for accidentally getting in his way, when really Bolton was in the way.”
“Are you two coming with me or staying here?” I cut to the chase.
Casen answers first, “I must stay my king, my family is here.”
“I’m going with you my king, I have nothing for me here, maybe my mate will be in Canada.”
I nod. “I want you both to keep an eye on Bolton for me, people you trust, tell them about your concerns, find out what you can. Sasha, I look forward to you joining me and my Queen.” I look to Casen. “If you want Bolton’s job it’s yours, I’ll be away from here, not able to keep an eye on the villages, it will be hush hush for the time being, until I get to the bottom of whatever Bolton is up to.”
“Yes, my King.”
With that I leave my office and head up to my rooms to finish packing. Tomorrow I’m going home to my mate.
